• Pros/Cons of a Career in Programming?

Mostly, it's just what you'd think it is. Where would you work? If you're working on some boring office cubicle programming dinky little automatic power-point designers, it'll be pretty boring. But if you're working for some kick-ass game company working on the newest in 3D games...different story.
It sounds like there's more cons than pros. I can't tip the scales to pros and make it sound like I'm going to like what I'm going to do.
It is an individual thing. Some people really like it and some people hate it. I used to do it as a hobby and now I'm doing it for work. The main difference about doing it for work is that projects have deadlines and this causes stress, and this stress can get associated with programming.
Their average wages range from $40,000 to $80,000. So money shouldn't be something you worry about. "If you do what you love as a profession, you will never work a day of your life"
The pay is pretty average actually. Programmers don't usually make over £40,000 annually.
I got more than that (converting to US dollars at the current exchange rate) from my first job out of college, in 2004. But my job title is actually "software engineer" -- what I do day-to-day is write code, but I'm designing (new code) or redesigning (existing code) in the process. A "code monkey" sort of programmer, who just gets handed a design spec and told to implement it, would probably make less, and your average may reflect that. Pro: you get paid to do the sort of creative work that you'd be doing anyway just because you like it. (I wouldn't recommend a career in software development to someone who doesn't enjoy doing it, but that's true for any job.) Con: Writing software to meet someone else's needs isn't as exciting as working on your own projects, but you have less time and inclination to work on projects of your own if you spend eight hours a day writing code at work.
chicks will dig you
chicks will dig you
Programming and chicks don't mix. I learnt that as a Freshman in high school.
Programming is like anything else, you don't usually earn much unless you own your own business.
Seriously, £40k is well above average salary. I think there's been a survey that says after about that, money doesn't really make any difference to your quality of life anyway. It was in New Scientist, I think.

Aslong as I can pay my electric and internet, i'm good.
I hope you're kidding. Programmers don't get paid shit.

The pay is pretty average actually.
Cons: I hope you're kidding. Programmers don't get paid shit.
Depends on what type of programmer. For example, experienced guy working at Crytek vs. out-of-college-newbie making some shitty Java game for some company no one has ever heard of.
Well, then about the pay part it depends where you live, where I live programmers get way above the average
No, they don't. They used to, back when programming was new - nowadays they earn above average wages if they're senior programmers or can program like gods.
What about utilities and heating?
I've heard from my Computer Networking teacher that if you go to a company like Microsoft or those in their programming positions, they want you relaxed, they want you to be able to think, as long as you meet their deadlines you can walk in wearing jeans and a t-shirt along and as long as you meet the deadlines you're okay. But if you miss a deadline I heard they fire you right there.
I'd been told by a colleague that Microsoft are actually very harsh. If they find you doing someone else's work because they can't do it they will fire you both straight away without any questions.
Let's ask Bill Gates himself.
I'm currently doing a games programming degree at Qantm university, when I've finished there, I want to work on at least one published game at some random company for three years and then apply for Valve.
maybe if i get a degree i can work @ valve!!! [editline]02:50AM[/editline] pissing on bonfires tonight [editline]02:50AM[/editline] true though
one thing i've noticed is a lot of the programmers on facepunch are fucking pricks and are willing to make you look stupid at any possible time they see necessary
one thing i've noticed is a lot of the programmers on facepunch are fucking pricks and are willing to make you look stupid at any possible time they see necessary
It's called reality.
I'd been told by a colleague that Microsoft are actually very harsh.
It's called reality.
lol you have a warped view of it then not everyone in the world is an asshole
You can do anything you put your mind to!
The pay is pretty average actually. Programmers don't usually make over £40,000 annually.
That's good money. You can live off way less than that. That's living comfortably and not having to drive a hoopty car and have a house with bars on the windows. Good enough for me. [editline]12:35AM[/editline] Really hoping for mor money than that is selfish an unrealistic.
lol you have a warped view of it then not everyone in the world is an asshole
People are dicks on the internet.
What's funny is Layla is prolly like 40, with nasty amounts of hair on his belly. Sitting here tryna be a hotshot among a bunch of high school/uni students by being a dick. But in real life he can't even leave his house so he spends all his time on Chat Roullette combing the hair on his arms.
Let's ask Bill Gates himself.
Except Bill Gates is retired.
