This is how the Charger look like in Gran Turismo. Ingame writing says Dodge Charger 440 R/T '70. They're always adding cars, maybe there will be more Chargers. I got few questions: 1. How long does it take to make this thing? 2. Did you use replicas or photos to help your modeling? 3. Any tips for starters like me? 4. Any plans for Super Bee once yours is finished?

There's been a dodge charger model going around garrysmod.org http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=99993 http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=99834 and they're both real because I've tested them both.

Can we stop talking about that though, it's not what this thread is focused on.
I got few questions: 1. How long does it take to make this thing? 2. Did you use replicas or photos to help your modeling? 3. Any tips for starters like me? 4. Any plans for Super Bee once yours is finished?
1) Look at when the first post was made and that will tell you. It was the 11th November 2008 when I started so it's nearly one and a half years. This model is a sort of on-off project for me, just something I work on occasionally. I do obsess over small details as well which also adds more time. 2) Photos mostly, it can be difficult to understand the shape of something from just one viewpoint though so it's important to get as many angles as possible. I have 277MB of photos related to the Dodge Charger which is another reason it has taken so long; searching for them. Many of the photos I had to find on obscure sites because they didn't show up on google image search. 3) Don't model a classic car first! It was my mistake with this model, it's too much to focus on for a newbie. The only reason I got through is because I'm a real fan of the original car and it's image, which is by far the best thing about it: styling. Choose something simpler to start on, if you absolutely insist on doing a car then at least choose somthing which you can find blueprints for, it makes it much easier to get proportions right which was definately the hardest part of doing this model, just look at the earliest pictures and compare them to the newer ones: [img_thumb]http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/9098/front1.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/3176/overview.png[/img_thumb] Even now there are a few parts which need improving such as the roofline and flying buttresses but it has improved dramatically since the beginning. Another tip is to build your model out of separate parts, this is something I didn't do at first and I regreted it. Doing so allows you to just focus on finishing small areas of the model which is a whole lot easier. When they are done they are done, you don't have to worry about accidently messing something up. If the whole model is made from one mesh then you may accidently select vertices or polygons that you can't see which can be very annoying as you can end up destroying a lot of work sometimes without realising it. Finally, don't get absorbed in small details. I found quite a few areas in my model where the details were correct but they were incorrectly proportioned in relation to the rest of the model because I had just focused too much on the small details and not looked at the bigger picture. Every now and then you should just zoom out and see if the details you have added actually fit correcty with the rest of the model. Also try to leave smaller details until the very end, make sure you get proportions and shaping right first and then add the smaller details. Oh and 4) No I have not, although there is a car in L4D1/2 which does look sort of similar to the 1968 model. I'm getting a drivable version ready for a friend and it will be released afterwards. Good or Bad?

http://www.madwhips.com/upload/images/1969_plymouth_fury_iii_1.jpg If so that's a 1969 Plymouth fury. My uncle used have one before he sold it in 2004

If you are still thinking of wheels for the charger, I suggest Crager Soft 8's with the chrome center cap. I always liked them.

My uncle used have one before he sold it in 2004
I already finished fixing up the L4D Plymouth Fury up, It's just a matter of of it getting rigged much later. And before you ask, yes I have worked on the other cars. If you check the first page of Master Chris's Vehicle Pack, you will find a Taxi-fied version of the 95 Sedan, or if you feel like going by names, the 1989 Buick Century. On another note, while the http://halflife2.filefront.com/file/...ehicles;105641 has a lot of cars, a lot of them have poor smoothing Look at the hood on the Plymouth Fury (car on the left)
If you are still thinking of wheels for the charger, I suggest Crager Soft 8's with the chrome center cap. Funny story actually, the first time i played L4D 1 i passed by the fury and of course my car obsessed mind made me turn and go back to look at it... then i was grabbed by a smoker.:sweatdrop:
I forgot one thing. Which part was the hardest to model? How are you going to model its bottom? What kind of car should I start with?
Kinda funny about that fury in left 4 dead I was like hey! you idiots lets drive out of here with this!
Does anyone have a E-mail for the guy that made the HL2 Vehicle pack?
Does anyone have a E-mail for the guy that made the HL2 Vehicle pack?
I think he has contact info in the read-me doesn't he?
I think he has contact info in the read-me doesn't he?
Let me check... Edit: No he didn't.
Let me check... Edit: No he didn't.
Oh well, and I'm guessing there's nothing on the download info page or whatever you want to call it?
Oh well, and I'm guessing there's nothing on the download info page or whatever you want to call it?
Nope, i was hoping there would be, i was going to ask if he diden't mind his pack merging with your guys pack...but nevermind...
Nope, i was hoping there would be, i was going to ask if he diden't mind his pack merging with your guys pack...but nevermind...
I don't see why, I posted earlier that most of them are poorly made and have smoothing errors everywhere. But I'll post some more Notice that weird white crap above the grill? that's bad smoothing. (In case people don't know what I mean) Just look at the weird shading on the side. Look at the hood of the cars, they have weird shading. Yes they are cool cars, but the fact they have crap smoothing will really take away from the car. The only ones that were done correctly were the two chargers.
Hmm, well what about the ambulance and the police car?
Have you used the pack? The interiors on most of the cars that never had interiors, (CSS vehicles and l4d ambulance), are pretty bad.
Have you used the pack? The interiors on most of the cars that never had interiors, (CSS vehicles and l4d ambulance), are pretty bad.
I haven't been able to use them... i haven't used them in Gmod anyway...
Those cars are sh1t! Sorry but saying the truth and I think we should stop talking/writing about it. Cookie & Chris are doing a great job so far so leave all to them. Slow process or not it's worth the time waiting.
I can't because my Mom is following this thread too X]
Haha what? But yeah I wouldn't worry about those cars. I know we'll get to something similar but better.
I can't because my Mom is following this thread too X]
Your mom plays Gmod?
F-No.

Haha what?

Your mom plays Gmod?
It was a joke fellas x] My Mom doesn't even know what is my job and doesn't understands my ways... So no need to worry about a 44 Y.O. woman playing G.mod and busting balls on STEAM XD
But yeah I wouldn't worry about those cars. I know we'll get to something similar but better.
That's why I said that, dealing with those trashy cars from that pack and getting in contact with the porting author/s, (etc.) is useless and time wasting...You guys are doing a really great job so far...
I forgot one thing. 1) Which part was the hardest to model? 2) How are you going to model its bottom? 3) What kind of car should I start with?
1) There were a few particularly hard parts such as the front bumper and the doors because there are complex changes in geometry at those points, it's quite difficult to see exactly how they are shaped just by looking at reference pictures so you have to try and make the shape and then look at it from many angles until it looks right from all of them. 2) That's one of the hardest parts to find reference pictures for, it took me a long time but eventually I found quite a few, you have to look hard though. Sites which sell cars are good bets for lots of good close up and underside shots: http://www.collectormotors.com/1968chrger440.htm Also if you know that the vehicle you are modeling has similar features to another car then you can use that car as another reference source. For example the Dodge Charger is a Chrysler B-body car and most other Chrysler B-body cars will have similar underpinnings and chassis so you can use them instead. If that fails then try to find information on the technology which the car uses: suspension for example. The Dodge Charger uses a mixture of torsion bar and double wishbone suspension on the front and a live-axle with leaf springs at the rear. You can then look that up and try to make it from scratch, if you do that then you have to try and make it look as realistic as you can but as long as you are sensible it will produce a result most people won't be able to distinguish from the real thing. 3) Preferably something you can find plenty of reference material for. Look for blueprints as well, it makes the overall size and proportions of the car much easier to match. Use The-Blueprints.com to find those, there's a very wide range of them there. Look for the cars you like and see which one of them would be easiest, set your sights low at first. You must be careful however since not all the blueprints are high quality and some of them may be misleading so if you feel that following certain details on a blueprint is actually making your model look worse then you may just want to freestyle that part until it looks right to you, this is why you should also have a wide range of other pictures of the car from many angles. Also try to imagine how you would actually model the car before you start, if you can see very complex areas you may want to avoid that car until you are more experienced. A car with a lot of flat sides and edges will be much easier to make than one with a flowing shape with many intersections.
