Animating any belt, chain etc is hard enough as it is because it can't be animated in the same way as most parts which rotate around a single point, a belt would rotate around many points and then have to go straight. Also since the belt changes shape constantly it would be extremely time consuming to rig a whole belt with loads of bones due to the source engine's poor support for vertex animation (which wouldn't require bones).
The only way to do it realistically would be to have an animated texture, but you wouldn't be able to stop it when you turn the car off unless you wrote a script to change the models skin when that happens. Personally I would prefer to leave the belt below the hood out of sight.
gotcha
On a random side note, I recently made a jalopy with a rather crappy, but cool blower on it.
On a random side note, I recently made a jalopy with a rather crappy, but cool blower on it.
you are nothing without pictures my friend!

Cool i always thought that car would look good with a blower
anyway if you have one a picture would be nice
Not that I want to hijack the thread, but if people really want to see it, I'll fetch pictures.
Not that I want to hijack the thread, but if people really want to see it, I'll fetch pictures.
If you want to then you can, I wouldn't mind seeing them.
Cool, I'll get right on that, then.
I have a couple of modeling questions:
At the moment i'm using geometry approximation to give the charger it's current look, will those settings be carried over to the compiled model?
Also i've heard in few tutorials that smoothing groups are used when making collision models or when rigging, what are smoothing groups and how do I use them?
Cool, I'll get right on that, then.
Is it done now?
Smoothing groups are what case certain edges of the model look sharp or smooth.
Every program does them differently so I'm not exactly sure with your program.
Smoothing groups are what case certain edges of the model look sharp or smooth.
That's what I thought, so why is it necessary to apply all the components of a collision model to a smoothing group, it's not even visible.
That's what I thought, so why is it necessary to apply all the components of a collision model to a smoothing group, it's not even visible.
If the collision model isn't smoothed properly it can cause compiling problems and the custom collision model will not be used.
If the collision model isn't smoothed properly it can cause compiling problems and the custom collision model will not be used.
What is the correct way to smooth it?
Well while I can't find any of the models I made collisions for, the rule of thumb I think is that the collision models smoothing shouldn't have sharp corners. If it doesn't work then put a crappy uv on it, no texture just a uv.

I was just examining the collision model on the EP2 jalopy and it's collision models are all hard edged, they don't look smoothed.
I was just examining the collision model on the EP2 jalopy and it's collision models are all hard edged, they don't look smoothed.
well the charger is pretty sqaure anyway so i woulden't bother smoothing them out, your just increasing the work load!
btw,I have a request for ya, how about a 2008 Ford Mustang KR
because i was watching the new knight rider series and this went through my head of being a epic car, especially with black chrome paintwork and the matte black strips

tasty! :p
After a long bout of procrastination, Here are the pictures I promised.

Props to Tomatosoup for having an awesome server and posing for me. Also offering the idea for the first picture you see. Thanks man.
If you want more pics, then ask, But for now, I want to keep my workload to a minimum
The blower was added long after anything else on the car. BUT the spoiler and blower were added on the same day.

Lawdy, dude, tell me your graphics settings next time and I'll take pictures.
They aren't that bad, although I probably should have turned up SS quality and put in some form of AA.
In fact, I have everything maxed out. :S
I hate how inaccurate the Ep2 Jalopy motor is.
Hey is this the car from Burnout Paradise?

While that car is devilishly sexy, it's the opposite. All cars in BO:P Are based off of real life cars.
All cars in BO:P Are based off of real life cars.
Exactly, the Hunter Cavalry is a mix of real cars. The front of a Pontiac GTO, the body from a Plymouth Barracuda and the rear end from a Ford Mustang.
Pontiac GTO

Plymouth Barracuda

Ford Mustang

The only car in Burnout paradise that truly resembles a 1968-1970 Dodge Charger is the Carson Fastback.

yeah TEH JUDGE!!!
That one's just a GTO without the Judge package.
That one's just a GTO without the Judge package.
yeah, but i noted the punisher symbol on the plate.... :)
Sorry for the lack of progress recently but the rear of the car is now almost complete. I have the shape of the fender and lights almost done, then I just need to round them a bit. Then I will start on adding detail to the roof and windows.
And the skinning? Also, what do you think of my Jalopy mods?
And the skinning?
Whoa there I haven't even finished the modeling yet, you can't start skinning until the mesh is completely finished.
Also, what do you think of my Jalopy mods?
Well...I have to be honest, I have seen better. In fact the way you bought it up in a modelling thread I had actually assumed that you had modelled something.
