Start with a sphere then cut it in half extrude it upwards, then delete faces and finally solidify. Edit: Quick example to show the result. Obviously if you were to spend more time on it you could get a better result (start with a rather high poly sphere to get thinner arms). [t]http://i.cubeupload.com/ncMHjY.png[/t]
I just ended up making a cube, using the bend modifier on it to get the bends. Mind you, its not very good. Make your base shape and extrude it along a spline. Ive done it with thin metal framed chairs before. Should work with this.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a car that would be easy to model for someone who's never done a car in 3d before? Something with relatively simple shapes.

Because the majority of these have an oddly Stalker'y vibe. All look fantastic btw. Fucking love the combine architecture. Takes on it in maps are usually so uninteresting and two dimensional.
Cool ZOMG, yeah the last picture, the one with the wires did use a modified and edited stalker texture as concept. The others are influenced from HL2, L4D1,2 stalker and other real world stuff. Cool you like Combine stuff, yeah the Combine has a distinct style in the HL2 world that the artists and developers have set I guess and it is difficult to do, to get right, especially the texture creation part of it not sure how close I am to the combine style but I am glad you like it. I have a few more ideas on combine props for my area but I have not got round to making them yet. This model I made before I knew what vertices and polygons were + that you could move them individually. Entire model is made out of primitives and booleans (and some splines). Why not both? You could make use of texture groups to have them both available.
