Depends, Do you want detail or just slap a texture onto a sphere?
I want some detail (rods like in the picture) because this is going to be large-scale. I know it's a nightmare, but I'm willing to do it.
Start with a sphere, Triangulate it (easiest way), give it a glass shader (I like using Blinn), and then begin adding cylinders or stretched cubes (To save on render times) with a metal-type shader (again, I like using Blinn). [editline]13th May 2013[/editline] You can add textures later if you want.
I want some detail (rods like in the picture) because this is going to be large-scale. In maya you just have to create a platonic solid, set it as Icosahedron then smooth it to add more sides.
You can create one in Max off the bat. Its one of the settings in the geometry. You can create a sphere or another type of sphere that is a geodesic type.

Work in progress "Junker" spaceship. I still need to make the weapons but I don't know what I want them to look like...

From there you either extrude each triangle inward, or manually apply rods to each edge.

Well, Mod tool has committed suicide. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSK8VqOzHgI Crashes every time I click on the grid, or any part of the window. What the actual hell, It was working before!
You can create one in Max off the bat. Its one of the settings in the geometry.
But what is the result? A basic sphere, or a sphere made of rods? (Like this) [t]http://puu.sh/2TgvE.png[/t]
A basic sphere, not one of rods.
A basic sphere, not one of rods.
Well, If you where using Blender, I could help you with that, I tried 3ds max but that shit is confusing... Literally, I just made a sphere, and used a Wireframe fonction that create rods where edges are, now, if 3ds max has that, I don't know.
I don't know if not posting your first, proper model here is standard practice, but I was hoping to get some feedback on my technique so I can improve. I'm almost positively sure I fucked something up here, or did something that could be done in a cleaner/better way. So, here's the mesh: [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/mesh.PNG[/thumb] And the wireframes: [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/mesh+wireframe2.PNG[/thumb] [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/mesh+wireframe.PNG[/thumb] [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/mesh+wireframe3.PNG[/thumb] Please, do share anything that you find wrong about the way I did stuff.
3DS max has "lattice" which works the same way. Thanks guys! EDIT: Finished product. [t]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/576737307031745984/7E23F3CB6968EC30D787DAFA151C39C9A47D6623/[/t]
But what is the result? A basic sphere, or a sphere made of rods? (Like this) [t]http://puu.sh/2TgvE.png[/t]
once you have that geodesic sphere, you can select everything and extrude each faces to make those rods, it's easy.

Thank you, now I can finally learn the pattern of that dance.
once you have that geodesic sphere, you can select everything and extrude each faces to make those rods, it's easy.
Then its just a matter of correcting any faces that are colliding.
[t]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/576737307031745984/7E23F3CB6968EC30D787DAFA151C39C9A47D6623/[/t]
Don't ask me why, But for some odd reason that voice in the back of my mind is telling you need to get a copy. When i know i can't use it for anything expection maybe to vector art. I don't know.

Well, As a Monorail Station that could work personally i've got a few ideas but they aren't a monorail station just a station...

You have too much that you don't need to get the same idea. My suggestion would be to make the parts individually. IE,the barrel proper, the muzzle and the rail on top. If you make them seperately, you don't need all that stuff on the barrel, in between the muzzle and the ammunition drum.

Thats the thing though Azgag. Even IF if it is the high poly, I could still get the same amount of detail for at least 80 to 90 pollies LESS, and thats in the barrel alone.
80 to 90? Maybe if it was in the hundreds of thousands it would matter but as long as you don't have a computer from the 80s it doesn't really matter if you blow a couple of thousand tris extra on a high poly as long as it does what you want.
That is a very good point, it does not really matter. However, some games like to have their geometries as low as possible and allow for the textures to do the job. That'd mean getting rid of any extras, like what I mentioned.
A highpoly is used to bake a normal map or to make a render, not for use in a video game.
Still, if he can get the job done with less where they are not needed, highpolly for renders or not, shouldn't the effort be made to take out what isn't needed?
No. Why waste time on something that has no impact on the the final product? I'd argue that more is better anyway, as it's easier to take them away than add new ones and maintain your shapes. There's no downside to having more polies than you need other than being a bitch sometimes to select what you need, but you'll run into tons of issues if you need to change something and don't have enough.
True, I will admit that. However, extrude is a wonderous tool in 3ds Max, and quickly renders that point rather moot.
