Made a trombone in maya. Making brass instruments is a pain in the ass..
is this correct for re-topology ?
It looks alright to me.
Made a trombone in maya. Making brass instruments is a pain in the ass.. What do you think?
I think it's a trombone.
is this correct for re-topology ?
If the model is merely going to be a statue yes, however if you plan on rigging and animating/ragdolling it you would need to set up the geometry at joint points like the elbow diferently because it will look crushed/overstretched when that limb is bent.
I'm not even finished with this, and I'm already hating what I've done so far.:suicide:
Try adding a bevel to it so the edges aren't like razor blades.

I also changed the pommel to more of a drop shape instead of the spherical shape it previously had, for aesthetic reasons. Again, critique is more than welcome!
Looks nice, what happens when you smooth it?
Not sure, let's find out together! Just appears to lose the desired shape :( Bevel seems to be a better option, ill give that a go.

I think I might just make the pommel a separate object, thoughts?
usually the best way to construct things is to construct them as you find them in life. of course you can cheat things like having geometry intersect, but what I'm saying is that if you want to make the pommel separate then you should consult your references.
I think I might just make the pommel a separate object, thoughts?
Just add in a few more edge loops to keep the shape when you smooth it.

Modelling could be a new daily hobby :) [editline]26th May 2013[/editline] I'd like to call this finished now: I might try to get better images for you guys.
always use reference
always use reference
Just felt natural.
References are used to help get a sense of what you're doing better, and possibly get the model done faster. Also, if you can get a front and side view of what you want to make, rotoscopy makes a world of difference.
it's about being able to draw from different things that really exist in order to make a design interesting. it is impossible to make anything good without pulling from experience and reference
I decided to have a go at Sting from The Hobbit/LOTR using a reference. It's quite shit but my second model. What happened in the middle of the sword?
What happened in the middle of the sword?
The middle is just more of a flat area, smoothing defined the strange skeleton you can see at the base and the end of the blade. Sting has a certain shape where it is thick at the base and toward the end of the blade, presumable for weight balance for swinging. Although that's my depiction of the sword, it is fiction after all! But I didn't want it to look as thin as paper. Edit: Just for fun I made a damascus steel viking sword. Concept Alyx.
Concept Alyx.
Ah, Yes that concept art that was "Leaked" I do wonder if that is legitment or just people saying it is.
Concept Alyx.
Her sleeves look too round and puffed out, they should be more tight looking as they are in the concept art [sp]Also the shirt's texture reminds me too much of Mossman's, but that's fine if you don't plan on changing it[/sp]
that's what i'm working on
