Hold shift and drag (move/rotate/scale) to clone selected element (vertex, edge, face etc.). I suggest you look into bridge, target weld and loop tools AKA compound modeling tools in Max.

i just get this
jeez i'm really not used to this, haven't done modeling since 2004
That's because you have vert's selected and not edges.
That's because you have vert's selected and not edges.
if i shift+drag while edges are selected nothing happens
I've always wondered what the point of floating vertices is. You can't create an edge between them because you can't have floating edges (which would be neat cause then you could use a Topogun sort of workflow). The only thing I know you can use them for is in conjunction with the create face tool (which feels pretty pointless).

You have to have an open edge selected (one that does not have both of its verts connected to another element). Doing this will drag out a new plane between the old and new edges.
Goddamn you've gotten good Juniez
Not to mention ridiculously fast.

i really don't get it

the "insert vertex" button does what i want, but it only adds it on one side

add it to the other with the edge selection. then use the "make planar" with both vertexes selected.

no that's not it either
i don't think i'm understanding this correctly, i'm more into hammers vertex edit tool, in which one brush is transformed, i think in modeling you have to divide it into segments...?
Hammer uses brushes that are actually considered solid by the engine (like they would be in real life). This is not the way to think when doing 3D modeling. 3D models are made up of infinitely thin surfaces and don't have to be closed. I'm not quite sure what it is you are trying to do. Maybe try the cut tool? I suggest deleting and creating some faces to grasp how modeling works.

I have no idea. I just want to make the corners smoother but then again i can't add vertices onto the edges of the fins

damn i've ben at this for 4 hours
Select the two edges you want to divide and press Connect?
Select the two edges you want to divide and press Connect?
then it divides it into triangles, i want another vertex in the middle

I think you just have to get used to it not being Hammer. Again, look into the compound modeling tools, they can do what you want if you REALLY want to go about it that way.

but how would i do it the proper way then? i just want to make that corner smooth without making a shitton of quicksplits all over the place
i can't really watch any tutorials so this is probably not the right field for me.
Why can't you watch tutorials? Also: Compound modeling tools. Specifically insert loop. Read up on what it does.

Short attention span, people trying to be funny in the videos, dragging out shit that's retard friendly..
Yeah no this thing isn't for me. I got a student license for 3ds max so it was free at least.
Finally got around to rigging that shuttle, and made some alternate skins.

I remember the first time I tried to model after using Hammer for 4 years, I couldn't grasp the concept of working without a grid, but once I was up and running Hammer helped me get a major headstart in understanding modularity/level construction atleast.
It's just pretty outdated now really, I'm looking forwards to the new engine though.

What is causing these swirling shadows on the straps, smoothing groups?
are there any free softwares for making ragdolls in gmod

I totally agree, after going back to mess around in CS:GO SDK after just a few months of using modern tools I was like "oh god did I seriously find this actually usable?"

This is what you want, yes? It's exactly what you're showing in Hammer.

oh i just had to move it? damn
it looked like something else to me
thanks

fuck yeah
so what's the easiest way to make it fish shaped instead of cardboard? i suppose the symmetry tool has a use here
You can probably select the outer edges and do some chamferring.
You can probably select the outer edges and do some chamferring.
i got the fins looking pretty good, but now for the body, i think i'm doing something wrong.

uv mapping
nailed it
isn't there an easier way to do this than dragging out points and guessing where all the parts are?
also do i really have to do this for the fins too?
You can import your texture map and use that as a reference.

i really have no idea what i'm doing
i somehow placed it with that auto thing and then rescaling, now for the eye.
can't really find anywhere to scale it and have the iris on the other side too

now this is pimpage!
i can't get the body texture to work ingame for some reason

finished!
allright, no more spam
Pistol model made in highpoly and baked gonna tackle the texture tomorrow. Any texture hints Juniez ;D
