Done! Well, it had a deadline, so it's as done as I could have made it in the timeframe:

Just make sure to have the triangle made out of vertices thingy ticked in the subsurf modifier
(model by Jonathon Williamson)
Neat, I never heard about that before.
Made some changes and replaced some props.

Actually it's an iPad of the future. You see, they decided to make the screen larger and larger. Eventually they decided it'd be better to make it a 2 ton bulky box you lug around and forgot about the screen. It looks like Microsoft hijacked it though. That fancy orange text screen you see is the new Desktop for Windows 24. Doesn't it look fun?! With that fancy new, large iPad, you can play your creepy Japanese videos at a perfect 5 fps!

I made a barrel to practice texturing. Any suggestions as to how I can improve it?

The scratches on the main body seem a bit too geometric - it looks like mostly straight lines, randomly going in different directions. maybe more rust and wear rather than scratches? i dunno, most barrels like that i've seen dont tend to have very many body scratches
I made a quick oildrum not long ago, I've uploaded the PSD so you (or anyone) can have a look and see how I did stuff. I'm not saying mines the best example since it was done fairly quickly and not intended as an important prop but there might be one or two thing's you like about it.
The normal map is exaggerated on purpose though so ignore that.

ivans secrets 1 episode two
I've got 2 new videos up. The first introduces the array tool and walks you through the process of modeling a dumbbell rack:

The second video is a great introduction to the Boolean compound object. If you've had trouble with booleans and want to learn the easiest and most effective way to work with booleans watch this first part to get the basics down:

I'm giving away that shark I made a few months ago.
The file is recovered from an old backup so I had to take out every second edge loop because I smoothed it (for some reason, I can't remember why), the highpoly is included as well if you want to make a better bake than I did. (which is crap)

why does floating mesh bakes with white borders like this?
The rays from your AO bake are hitting the backside of the floating mesh. Here's some info on how to fix it: http://wiki.polycount.com/AmbientOcclusionMap. If you are only doing a very simple bake like that I would suggest going with the light tracer solution.
Picked up an old model of mine. Spent the entire day refining and detailing. Great hangover cure.

Photoshop seems to be the more common option to go with. However, GIMP is also quite useful, and it has the added benefit of being free.

I use photoshop for texturing and I know it quite well, but I dont know how to make a realistic wood base, most tutorials Ive seen make terrible wood textures.

well you don't
there's no conceivable practical reason (outside of art style, of course) to stay away from photo sourced bases
either that or you can either sculpt or hand paint them depending on the art style... but for 'realistic' visuals you should really be using photo bases
