We seriously do lack really mass effect-y maps, though. What happened to your Normandy map? I'm planning on doing noveria after christmas.

Nah, he has very good rigging most of the time. Mostly the shoulders from my experience. As to your coulouring plasmid. Why don't you try to tone down the rust and instead work some better phong, envmaps and noise overlay to make them stand out a tiny bit more. using some kind of noisy detail texture ought to do the trick.

Oh, I thought he was using that alpha trick instead. if you're making the colouring yourself though, why keep them so uniform? Add more highlights, bits and pieces in other colours here and there. EDIT Meant floater, must be blind tired.

Still no matter who does the colouring, I advice to break up the monotony. Make colour details that don't get masked, make small details here and there and reduce the rust at the same time. I'm pretty sure in ME1 it might exist in-engine. Most of the cutscenes in ME1 look in-engine to me, so it's probably in there. I'm pretty sure i found textures for it by accident the other day, too.
