has anyone thought about making mass effect maps? it would be excellent for posing
As I have mapped before (see 1, 2, 3), I (kind of) know what I'm talking about. ME2 uses a modified version of Unreal Engine, which uses models only for their maps. As Source uses brushes to calculate the lighting, porting maps from Unreal to Source is not a smart thing to do. I don't even think Source can handle that many vertexes and polygons on the screen at the same time, not to mention the lighting would be non-existant.
If you really want the map as it is, you have to be really skilled and remake the map from scratch or deal with horrible lighting and constant crashes.
Well, you sort of can use models as maps and have it lit and shadowed like a normal map, but it will probably lag like fuck and take ages to compile because it's rendering the whole thing at once.
The only reason you should ever do that is maybe for exterior areas, but never for a whole level.
I've thought about remaking omega using ported textures and models but i kind of hit a brick wall when i couldn't find any of omega's architecture textures.
I might take another look at some point.
Phonebooth is making a Citadel map (Map Pimpage v10 thread)Dunno if he is continuing it though, looked epic.
I asked if he was releasing it, he responded below:

In your presidium map, do you use custom models as well? If you don't mind me asking, do you have any approximate release date?
I am a huge ME-fan and I am also an experienced poser, so I'm extremely interested in what you're doing.
Nevertheless, excellent work. I can't wait to see more from your map.
I do plan to use custom models in the map. Currently though, everything is brush based.
If I were to hunker down and work on it as hard as I did for the first two months, I should probably have it done in about another month or two. With that being said though, I wont be working on it as hard as I was. It burned me out mentally. As for a release, currently, my plan is to finish the Presidium and use it as a large piece of portfolio work. Releasing it is up to whether or not I get a job. Haha
Anyways, thank you very much for the message and the interest.

Not looking too good though.

Little teaser what's coming next
No, that's a ME1 armor. I'll include all the different textures (and helmet), just like I did with my Krogan release.
You've done well, lad.

Ooh, nice find. Downloaded all of that.
Wait, they're Texmod packages. Well, I have the Steam version so that sort of blows it out of the water.
How lame.
You can use texmod with the steam version, i've got ME2 on steam and i used it without any problems.

There's tools to unpack texmod packages.

Awesome! :D
Any possibility for citizens/asari in civilian clothes?
Yeah, shit, whenever someone can or feels like it; it'd be nice to get civilians too.
Keep up the good work all of you!
I'd like to see a pack of salarians...
