Fewes, what is the usual texture res you use for a gun? I use 2048x2 but was surprised by the lack of detail, do you take the approach where you give most surfaces the same space, or do you give more space to the areas closest to the camera and less for further away?

I may be reading that wrong; 2048 by 2 pixels?
I think he mean: "two 2048X2048 textures".
[QUOTE=Trek;34892514]I think he mean: "two 2048X2048 textures".[/QUOTE]
No, he means 2048*2, as in 2048x2048, not 2048x2048*2

Well that makes a lot more sense unless he was textureing a plane; thanks.

Depends. Most often I find it easiest to break it up into several maps (though that's not ideal for rendering), and for medium sized rifles I usually want at least 2 1024^2 textures. It depends heavily on how much texture space I can reuse (mirrored parts etc. Sometimes I get away with just one 1024^2 texture and still have it looking great). I usually never go above 2048^2 for one texture map but I sometimes work with 4096^2 just so I can get some nice renders (the revolver I did for instance has a 4096^2 texture, though it's really not that necessary)
And yes, I usually dedicate more texture space to parts closer to the screen or parts that are in plain sight.
Something I have been inspired by recently is how the guns in Metal Gear Solid 3 are made. They have high geometrical detail in crucial areas and avoid circle like shapes in the texture map, instead relying on polygons to do that kind of job. This makes the guns look really good while still having really low texture res.
If Dean wants modular curtains, Dean gets modular curtains.

Not textured yet. I think it's an improvement considering [url=http://i53.tinypic.com/ae7fis.png]this[/url] was the old one I made. It's for my Twin Peaks thing.

2100 tris, although I am not too worried about the footprint.

I could not be more pleased with these curtains.

I wish Facepunch supported img tags with width/height properties. At least big images don't table break any longer.
Yeah Facepunch needs an image resizer similar to Polycount and Interlopers, Fewes mind telling me your render setup? You have that really thick chrome look and I really like it, mine tend to look like toys.
Might need to reinstall Max, I just get errors when I try to open that material.
Using [url="http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69829"]this material[/url], three Mental Ray target lights and some slight Photoshop post process.
Grew a bit bored with gun. Made shells.

Get yourself a website Fewes and start earning cash, you're at that level.
He has one. It's my homepage.

Only the earning cash part left then. Almost got a job a while ago though.

Seriously though fewes, these are the best HD models I've ever seen, you should think about going somewhere with it ;D
Lack of ideas recently though has made me extremely pesemistic. I usually avoid that by makeing something every day or two and it helps me feel like I am improving, it feels like seriously heavy writers block and it is getting annoying. Any thoughts on what I could do or something that you do when you get in a jam?

Oh believe me, I do want to go somewhere with it. Just gotta find somewhere to take it all to.
Also did someone say HD? 'Cause I've got the complete opposite right here:

When I'm out of ideas I usually watch movies (Terminator for instance made me want to make a Spas 12) while doing something else at the same time. Browsing for random stuff at places such as DeviantART or even looking at random Wiki articles sometimes helps, too. If I'm in the mood for guns I usually head over to [url="http://www.pixagogo.com/DeicideNBF"]the good old ref picture gallery[/url] for ideas.

The problem with that is that I am absolutely shit at guns and that makes it hard for me to actually start, Very curvy and rounded.

You can start anywhere really, just spot a part which you already know how to make and then dont move on to another part unless you're happy.
Good work Juniez, is that your first highpoly model?
third i think? the first one was looking at a tutorial and the second one was a screwup though, so they don't really count :v:
Fantastic stuff mate, although I spot a few errors you could go back and fix, for your first/third attempt it's impressive.

as exciting as this was i'm also going to have to admit there are some fatal mistakes that prevent me from continuing
Is it that one of the sights is on the silencer instead of the gun itself?
