I'm getting a tablet with the money I get for Christmas, can anyone suggest some good tablet's for me to check out? Not crazily expensive ones though...
The one I use is discontinued but from what I gather Wacom is regarded as the best company to get tablets from. If I decided to get a tablet today it'd probably be an Intuos5 medium w/o touch. Goes for around $350 I think.

They are, the Intuos are probably the best ones you can get, or if you are low on money, the new Bamboos are pretty for that kind of money. I've been using a Cintiq 12W but the colors on that LCD are pretty shitty (so I might sell it to get an Intuos).
Oh yeah, crap. Should probably have mentioned that in the breakdown. I use one of these but I've been looking to upgrade to an Intuos recently.

I had one of these, it did me well for texturing. Now I use a Wacom Bamboo. I generally don't use the touch, but otherwise, it's done right by me for the past few years I've had it. Besides the larger area, it supports some of the more advanced photoshop controls, which makes brushing on minute scratches and highlights way easier.

I like coming here to see the beautiful smooth and shiny models, they are all great.

I use non-name brand tablets and haven't had a problem yet. You still get a large tablet with multiple levels of sensitivity and buttons on the pen but at 1/4 the price.

@Fewes, congratz on getting your gun on Polycount's weekly recap :)
How do the tablets work? like does it show your desktop so you know where you put your pen or is it like another peripheral for manipulating the mouse?

It's the latter, but you can buy a tablet that does have a screen on it. They're pretty expensive though.
Made the ends a bit deeper and added caps (modelled myself based on John's work, so without the complex bit). Hopefully I can get Blender to play nice with baking normal maps now.

Edit: first attempt at a barrel about 2 weeks back when I started modelling:

your barrel looks good man
Did some more on my boomstick;

Safety switch was a pain in the ass D:

Thanks - now I just need to work out how to make a low-poly that doesn't look like shit :(
Finished this model I started on Friday. Very happy with it for now and will probably go and texture/animate it soon.
Mix of Halo 4's MA5D, BR85HB SR and M395 DMR (With a little bit of FAMAS thrown into the mix)
>Three things<
I. I forgot the ammo counter and will model it in later today.
II.Iron sights are from a MW2 Famas and I will change them/model my own later- these were just placeholder to see how they'd look on the gun.
III. I might add in a battle rifle scope though considering it's a weapon with a rail it'll be freely changed.

is that supposed to be a low poly or a high poly or what
its like an awkward in between
Yeah, it is kinda awkwardly in the middle but I guess this is the low poly :P
I don't even know
well to crit:
it's not efficent because the poly distribution is so uneven
it won't render well (in realtime) because of so many small tris
it won't bake normal maps well if you go that route
it has micro-bevels and small indents that could just as well be in the normal map or diffuse
it won't unwrap well because you have so many microbevels and small stuff
you have hugely detailed cylinders that are disproportionate in polygon density to the rest of the mesh

yeah, that's something i often do, though If i wanted to unwrap it, i could easily remove all the miniscule details like bolts and indents.
what is something that you often do
and also a lot of these things are aesthetic problems as well as they are noticeably inconsistent. you appear to have random smoothing here and there or none at all. awkward geometry, microbevels being in some places and not in others. it all counts towards how the piece looks as a whole and when there's a lot of stuff that is not consistent it really plagues it.
I often put in lots of small details that should be done via textures.
I'll fix the smoothing and some missing parts later also when I'm done being lazy
I often put in lots of small details that should be done via textures.
if you're agreeing that something should be done a certain way and continue to not do that, then you're doing something you think is wrong. why would you do this
don't make bad habits
The habit is already there, but up until a few months ago I didn't care for textures or the such and ended up just putting all the detail on the model and that's about it.
God I wish I was as good at texturing as you guys. It's like modelling is something I can see myself getting good at if I practice, but my diffuse textures just look ridiculously cartoonish and awful.

are you not getting the point or are you just going to keep making excuses
are you not getting the point or are you just going to keep making excuses
I get the point but old habits die hard.
I might low poly this thing up a bit but idk
the problem is that modeling a certain way is not a hard habit to break
just learn more and practice dude there's no point in saying it'll be hard to quit doing something badly when the solution is incredibly easy.
[editline]1st December 2012[/editline]
also i don't mean a literal habit because that doesnt even make sense for modeling practices
saying old habits die hard makes no sense
Would anyone be able to do me a favor and give me a model in DAE format with diffuse & normal maps so I can get a decent test model for my engine?
Right now I'm using a Skyrim model but it has a lot of weird geometry that is starting to piss me off
