Ok now what.
Damn, my hexing still doesn't work... :(
To be honest this hexing method is pretty darn hard, it seems to me that it'd be easier just to decompile, edit qc, compile. Maybe it's just me though.
Hexing is very confusing, i didn't get it at all.
There's a backup hexing tutorial below mine. Hexing might be easy after a while, but it's not meant to be easy at the beginning. Basically you need two source folders for your skin, open the mdl with XVI32. The first thing you'll see is the path to the models, and at the bottom is the path to the materials. All you have to do is to rename both correctly save and change the old name of your models (inside your source folder, not inside XVI32) to the new name given. Example: "t_leet.mdl" should be renamed into "shadow.mdl" in order to work. Same for the other files. For the materials, if you changed their path in XVI32, do it as well with the folders. As for the VMTs, open with notepad and rename.
I've always had trouble skinning. Nice thread.
What about normal mapping.
Nor bad. Not bad at all.
Great tutorial!
Would you be able to answer where my hexing went wrong? I followed about 3-4 tutorials including yours to make sure I didn't do something wrong, but now I spawn it and it crashes instantly!

Wow! Great tutorial! I couldn't hex my skin though. But that's because it was my first time and I wasn't doing the leet. Can you make a tut on hexing a hostage skin?
How the FUCK is this not a sticky? Edit: Great tut...in fact... Even better than the sticky...:raise:

Ughh my brain hurts hexing hurts!

Hi, I am brand new here and wanted to first just say THANKS to sh4d0w for putting this together and thanks to everybody else who contributed! I am absolutely new to skinning. I came to this forum post not having 1 clue how to do it and left it having extracted my files out of the GCF file, opened them in photoshop, edited them and saved them back out! woohoo! that was a lot to learn from just one forum post! However, I am having trouble making my skin appear in game. First let me tell you I probably did a bad thing by not trying this with the Counter Strike example. I followed all the steps but tried to apply the steps to garry's mod 10. I want to create new clothes for the character Breen. everything seemed to be the same though, even the hexing (wow, that is craziness to me at this point but i did try it). :) The thing is I have tried many, many different configurations for my directories. I do have all 6 model files plus the VTF and VMT files in models folders and materials folders respectively but I just cannot seem to get anything to show up in game. I tried to imitate a settings file from another addon I downloaded also but not sure if I did that right. So before I write a small book here, has anybody made a skin for a HL2 character and used it in garry's mod 10? If so I could really use some help on this last step. I feel like I am so close but just can't sort out this last step! Thanks again already for all the help! And if I am missing something obvious that is already written here feel free to give me some grief about it...it is a fair trade for me as long as i can sort this out! heh ;) p.s. funny little thing, when i tried to hex a new character, i went into the game and my new character was an option to spawn but it is completely invisible, heh. if i spawn it way up in the air you can see anything but a second later you see dust and can hear it hit the ground. :)
Alright, um, I'm sort of new at this, but I was wondering how, once you get your model into Photoshop, what exactly do you do to begin... Well... Skinning it? What do I do, just draw on top of it with a brush? I'm so confused as to what I do now for my model
He should get alot more gold stars than that!
I am sorry... Could somebody help me? I've customized a skin. No i don't understand how to get it into gmod. I customized the Phoenix Connection skin. But i don't know where to put it. I can't import it back trough gcfshape. Maybe i did not understand the last part of the tutorial right. Please help me with that. Thank you.
Sorry i am not reading it will give he a migrane
I have a question, my metrocop is really shiny and chromey,it's a weird enviroment thing, you can kind of see the skin. How do I fix it? (.VMT) EDIT: I could really use some help with this. It was VMT env. map or normal map thing.
Thanks Shadow, now I can now call myself a skinner!!! My Facepunch dream! *hugs you*
I have a quick question about creating a spawn list in GMod 10. Sure, I can make it in-game, but for some reason the game isn't letting me do what I want to do. I've tried making a spawn list by just copying the code from the other files, and it worked. The only thing is is that I have no idea what the number at the top of the document is for. Example:
"0" { "Information" { "name" "DoD: Player and Weapons" } "Entries" { "1" { "model" "models/player/american_assault.mdl" }
Now I know how to change the spawn list name and add/remove models, but what is that number for. "O" being the number in this document. And any information on how to get the number when creating a new spawn list would also be appreciated.
Thanks a bunch. This will come in handy when I need to make some custom models for my movies. :D
