Well making a map of District 9 would be fairly simple... it's just a densely packed landscape of simple shacks. Throw in a few junk piles, some ruined walls, lots of alien grafitti, and a big ass ship overhead and you've got a map.
You know what would be awesome, make this into a team deathmatch gamemode - MNU vs Prawns set on a D9 map (maybe throw in a nigerian team as well for a 1v1v1 like at the end of the film)
MNU gets trucks and the occasional apc and chopper, as well as those fancy white guns, etc
Nigerians get more banged up trucks and jeeps, but can access aks, rpgs, and machetes and shit
Prawns get the sweet alien guns and the occasional mech but have less players on their team than either the MNU or Nigerians (to help balance shit out)
Basically it'd just be this endless 1v1v1 firefight in the slums with bodies getting shot, chopped up, zapped, and blown up all over.
Then the map needs to be HUGE if there's gonna be vehicles.

Sounds awesome. Notice how I removed the bit about vehicles though? Source Engine doesn't do vehicles + online very well, + the maps would need to be reeeally big, another thing the Source Engine doesn't do so well.
You'd be surprised. When you consider the fact that the map's content in this case is relatively simple (nearly all the buildings on the map are literally just 4 walls and a roof) you can cram a lot into a map that's not even full size say... 16000 units squared? (about a quarter mile each way)

I think we should keep the maps with the shacks more like a "high and tight"/"close quarters" kinda deal, no vehicles, no heli's, maybe shotties and pistols for the MNU soldiers and the less intense alien weaponry for the prawns.
A somewhat larger map should be made for bigger battles with or w/o vehicles, maybe like the D9 outskirts, city, etc.
The MNU building would make another good "close quarters" kinda map...maybe some of the more devastating prawn weaponry as per the movie.
You know what would also make a good map, is to just have a closed (maybe fenced) in field "High Grass" like the images above...where you're not really sure who you're shooting at due to grass/wheat/straw...whatever that stuff is haha.

That and maybe the occasional wide road/path through the dense slums... that way was you move through the map there will be instances where heavy cqc could suddenly be interrupted by the appearance of an apc or mech barreling through the warzone.

A good "long-grass" map would be very interesting, but essentially any map being made here needs to be made for a specific purpose gamemode to be truly succesful. Whilst im sure it would be fine to make an endless slum of shacks and huts with simple designs for full outdoor combat gameplay, I really think adding detailed interiors is the key to flowing urban engagements. And theres no way youre going to get that many (as seen in the overhead pic) without optimisation issues (considering there would ideally be other parts of the map to think of also).
I think I may have to settle for a "medium" amount of shacks and then some more grassland type areas to size it up a bit. Consider me part of the project however.
And if anyone could model me a skybox-ready Alien ship.....I would love you severely.

I can make a map semi based off of District 9. I've been designing maps since CS 1.5 and Firearms days. Just fire off some ideas to me and any reference you can provide me. (I've saw the film) I'll be sure to throw in everyone's constructive idea.

Not to be an ass, but I think you guys got the MNU security guys mixed up with the MNU mercs. The mercs are the guys led by the bald francis look-alike, and they wear brown clothing. The regular MNU guys wear mostly black or other dark colours. Also MAKE YOUR OWN NORMAL MAPS! Use CrazyBump or InsaneBump, or just draw your own. The photoshop filter just makes everything look rough and grainy. It'd also help if you added some shadows and some shading to the base textures (not just the normal maps) of the soldiers, it doesn't look right how their clothes are completely flat.
