You just need to select the model, no need to go sub-level, and apply it. There is also the possibility that all faces are not connected and no matter how much you smooth, it will still look wooden.

Are you guys working on UCBS?

These models are awesome, but I need to request something... I want to use these models for an animation project I'm doing in 3ds max, but I cant get any converter to work for getting the model into max. Could I please get .max files? Or if I could get .3ds or .obj I could rig them again, that is no big deal. thanks for taking the time to read this :P

already tried it and unfortunately i think my computer just doesnt like it :P

procedure entry point Q_AppendSlash could not be located in the dynamic link library vstdlib.dll :( fixed it :P but weskerver3 crashes it... so if its not too much trouble could i have that one....
