this guy's videos are the freaking best. He has a good voice, the dicrections a simple and also very effective. I started mapping because of him
NO. HIS VIDEOS ARE NOT THE BEST. HE TEACHES BADLY. LOOK AT HIS PORTFOLIO/SITE. NOTICE HOW EVERYTHING SUCKS?
God.
NO. NO STOP RECOMMENDING THIS FUCKER. HE IS GIVING BAD ADVICE TO PEOPLE. STOP. REMOVE THE LINKS. SAY YOUR SORRY. HE GIVES HORRIBLE ADVICE.
Fucks sake. In a few weeks when my brother goes back to college I'm going to start a series of correct youtube videos for new mappers that don't give SHIT ADVICE.
SO STOP RECOMMENDING HIM.
PM me when you start i want to see
Two weeks tops. Waiting for brother to go back to college.
And why is it that everyone is following video tutorials? They suck when mapping, if you should map use the VDC, Mapping Encyclopaedia or any other source. BUT NOT YOUTUBE! (Youtube will show you how to do it, but you will most likely not see exactly what they did, which you do if there is pictures instead to help you.)
And yes, Lord Ned have right on several points!
Hes going to shit inside before you even start training him.
translated: beginner mappers will make a really shitty fullbright map that consists of three brushes and release it onto facepunch while thinking its the best fucking map in the world.
most of the stuff I learned with hammer I learned on my own. except for when I was starting with entities. I was really fucking confused with entities and their purpose. I only used tutorials for entity shit like making a button responsive door.
Say what?

That was my first map.
Sure I never finished it and it didn't even use displacements because I didn't even know that they existed, but it sure wasn't fullbright :v:
See this? http://optimization.interlopers.net/
Let me show it to you again. http://optimization.interlopers.net/
Print that out, make a cover for it that says bible on top of it. That is your new bible. Read it and understand it to the point that it's second nature. I don't care if your map looks like a crap hole, you can improve that aspect over time, but first and foremost all of your maps need to be optimized.

Some of his videos I send to people I am trying to teach mapping to, though only basic ones like water, making brushes, using the clipping tool and a few other random ones. He has a decent voice for tutorials and provides the basic concepts correctly, though I wouldn't trust his videos for anything advanced.
It's called the cordon. ;_;
If you're making a complex map and have a huge gaping hole in part of the level that can't be blocked by easy means, cordon is the same as having a huge skybox around the level. All of the same leaves are made, and it takes the same amount of time to compile.
Either method is perfectly valid to use, you just have to understand to only do it during map development and not on a final compile.

It is because some people learn differently than others if you didn't obviously know that. For me reading directions has never worked, Pictures and videos work way better because i can follow something for example. It all comes down to the persons preference.
amen brother, amen.
It's been said that you never lose bad habits, but I had horrible mapping habits when I started off. Recently I've shaken them off when I learned about optimization and whatnot.
Not too long ago, I watched his videos because I had nothing better to do. I did spot a lot of ways that things went wrong, but the number of good things far outweighed the bad things.
And about the dog training thing? Hammer is the dog. You are the owner. The tutorials are the book on how to train your dog. If the book says something wrong, a lot of the time you realise it's wrong. So when it gets to actually working with the dog, you improvise and things go OK. If you don't realise that the book is wrong and follow it, the dog'll crap in the house.
Even if people do get stuff wrong, through trial and error they'll get it right eventually :P
And 3kliksphilip's tutorials are humorous, that's why I watch them. The tree was just creepy and hilarious xD
his tuts are good for starters. i got into mapping because of him. im glad i did.
