Why did no one say EvoCity2 yet?
Because it isn't even remotely the best looking map.
EvoCity2
EvoCity2
EvoCity2 is ugly and unoptimized as fuck.
EvoCity2 is ugly and unoptimized as fuck.
It is, in fact, optimized, but not that good. Plus it's just too big.

There's no such thing as "optimised, but not too good". I say this because optimising it implies that you make it better, which Evocity 2 is not.

And laggy to the point of forcing my PC to restart itself without any warning.

Watching those ships fly over you is so awesome.
A couple years ago I started working on a compilation of the best looking maps I could find, and tried to make an artistic piece out of it:

Pretty nifty.
I loved the effect near the end though, where it looked like a 3d technical sketch, very fitting effect, share your secret! :D

I'm guessing he swapped the regular textures for grayscale versions with specific highlights, such as the grouting between the bricks, the outline on the edge of that screen near the beginning of that section of video, and he had a demo ready, so that he could play back and record the demo, then recorded the demo twice, once with the grayscale textures, one with regular textures.
Really nice job though
Can people please post pics/links. It seems pointless without.
My favourite is gm_atomic, the aptmosphere is bang on and you can build with the radio chattering in the background. I love it and am planning on trying to make an even larger yet more detailed version.

The Progenitor Project is the best I've seen since ever.

lots of high quality props and textures, definitely some coding to get lighting like that

I wouldn't be too sure about the coding part, I've done some smaller project thats consist of a room where I try to achieve the best detail and lighting, you can go a long way with source when you are using smaller lightmaps.

Or he just used a post processing effect in the video editing software he used.
I don't think anybody got the joke. Even if we did it was probably really lame, sounded like one of those "I know you are but what am I?" jokes to me.
hes fucking banned when he was saying i should. thus, i replied you already are.
wasnt supposed to turn into a big laugh. but what can i expect from facepunch.
I'd say oskutin's wip map, but then again it's hard to choose.
Either his, or none of them.

at least to get the distance of the object casting shadows to have a different amount of sharpness , or just a few lights and -staticproppolys and -staticproplighting (forgot about those when I wrote the last post...)
Or he just used a post processing effect in the video editing software he used.
All screenshots and video I've posted are straight from in-game and have no post-processing effects or filters applied to them. WYSIWYG.

QFT. Much of the high-detail shadows are achieved using small lightmaps and careful placement of the source light. robmaister12 mentions using -staticproppolys.. In my first teaser of the main hall, the compile wasn't using said options, however the trailer of the dining room does, and it can make quite the difference.
de_wanda, de_thematrix, de_rush, de_corse

wow, for some reason it looked as though some of the shadows got a little blurrier as the shadow moved away from the object cast, but looking at it now, knowing that it isn't, I can see how it's well placed light sources and low lightmap scales...

You could kind of fake it by having surfaces near the light source have extremely low lightmap scales, and steadily increase them as you get farther away from the object casting said shadow. Though I didn't get into that much detail. :P
nipper opus maps are pretty chill.

Evocity2 is optimized, however the GC is not and that was the only major issue with the map. I have removed the old GC and replaced it with a simplified sealed one and it runs much better, ~32FPS instead of 13-15FPS. I will agree my map is not by far one of the best source maps, however it is one of the better RP maps and had different goals in mind that most Source maps. I had to spread detail out more because in case you guys aren't aware Source has these things called limits and I reached them.
EvoCity2 is ugly and unoptimized as fuck.
Second part is way wrong. Your PC just sucks ass or you have insanely high FPS standards.
Anyway yeah de_wanda is one of the best looking maps, however it ran really bad on my lower end machines, but what GOOD maps don't nowdays.
-;17060622']de_wanda, de_thematrix, de_rush, de_corse
Hehe, someone won me, I was gonna say de_corse... One of the best maps i have seen.
The church its just beautiful.
