Cool beans cant wait for it to come out
That really looks amazing. Great job :)
I'd love to see a time machine on lever 3 :) even though it might not be logic? but maybe in a story it can be used to prevent the plague from happening and "you" shall be that man/woman :P As of me, i would love to use it in my (hopefully) coming terminator movie. As of your map i wish you good luck and i think it will be 1 epic map in the end.
It's looking pretty decent, though you should probably consider renaming the city to any word which doesn't sound like 'Anal'.
Looks very promising... If you need help in anything except modelling, I'm here, just PM me! I can help you in mapping, mateiral making and beta testing too... Oh, and please add a custom skybox, the originals are so boooriiing.....
I love the map concept, and would download it as soon as it was finished. You should add a secret chemical lab where scientists worked on a vaccine to prevent further infection from the disease. Two questions: One, what is the texture you used on the earliest screenshots (the orange one, with the 512x512 grid on it) and two, why did you name it Skyfall City?
Those pillars look sweet, but there's something wrong about the concept... I appreciate you're going for a super-high-tech feel, but surely even in the distant future, you don't really need anything more than a few girders to hold up a roof, especially of one made out of materials and using techniques that are obviously infereor... That level of over-engineering begs the question 'If they're willing to go to that sort of technical length to keep an old rotting roof up, why don't they just rebuild a superior structure to hold the same purpose? A suggestion to get around this while still maintaing a really interesting feel would be to give the sense that there are more sentimental reasons why the old buildings are being preserved - like their old-fashioned design is inspiring to those of the future, and I think a good way to go about this would be by recreating the missing building parts to a similar historic design as to what they are replacing but using high-tech new materials in an obvious way - I.e, a half collapsed arch bridge cleverly held up with super-modern scaffolding and metallic bricks replacing those which have crumbled. If you go for this approach, I'd suggest cleaning up any non-useful debris in repaired buildings, however as an interesting twist, the debris could perhaps be displayed in glass cabinets to really relay the message that the aim of the restorer was that of preservation.

Might do that.
Looks very promising... If you need help in anything except modelling, I'm here, just PM me! Of sorts. 1) dev/dev_measurewall01a 2) It was just a name that came to me, but I suppose it's just a play off of skyscrapers--or the fact that lots of people fall from the sky and die in this city. Suckers.
Those pillars look sweet, but there's something wrong about the concept... But the way the rich folk who came to the city were was just with an attitude of "screw this old town, let's just build on top of it", with no incentive or kindness to its heritage. A lot of things in the story are impractical (like gigantic metal walls), which I'm trying to figure out, but my excuse for the technology at the very least is that by this time in the future, it's actually an inexpensive alternative to finding and bringing in, or assembling on site, bulldozers and cranes to deconstruct everything. I'm going on the idea that the pillars distribute a sort of energetic current throughout the entire structure of the building's walls and roofs (see the picture where the chandelier fell, revealing the energy stream) which give it form and keep it from collapsing any further, even when the structure is weak, roofs have caved in, etc. How does that sound? I also did have a first idea to actually add things like metallic supports, frames, and more to make it more obvious that the buildings are being held together... So I might go more in that direction, as well. On the same note, I think it'd be also really cool to have one mansion or house or something that does preserve parts of the city... That could be an interesting implied story... Imagine, somebody actually has a gigantic chunk of a house hidden in a huge glass exhibit? Anyhow, I just finished the last part of City Hall--now I'm working on the park outside. I'm thinking that it will have a huge treehouse. Because wireframes are awesome. Wow thats really starting to take shape. Good job
What do you call a mapper with a positive outlook and short compile times? An optimist. :v: I've been optimizing my map. Yay! And also, horses. The structure built around the statue is the walkway to get into the gigantic megaclub Cronos. Basically, we're movin' up! Also, I've added some ambient sounds around the pillars. Crackly energy. Ooohh.
Looking very nice Scyze, let me know if you ever need a hand to flesh out the back story or add characters. I would very much love to see this project complete!
WooooooooooooooW... that map will be EPIC... (Sorry, i cant say anything more... I just dont have words for this..) [editline]03:23PM[/editline] I think you should write an RP gamemode for this (or ask a good coder for it if you dont know LUA, like me...)
looks amazing im def. downloading
Thanks for all of the positive feedback, guys! I updated the first post with some more stuff to add, only a few things though. The fonix232, I'm going to send you a PM. Dren, if you're interested, I would love any help you can give with thinking up backstories for locations--the main plot itself I have already sketched out (and am pretty clingy to), but pretty much anything you can think up that I like for any building/place will totally direct where I go with its construction, so if you're interested in that, please toss some ideas over. An example of what mean would be the rich man who collects old parts of the city and preserves them, such as what Khaskus and I were talking about.
Re-PM-ed... The new stuff will be nice, but what about adding an Energy Central? Because all of these things must be powered... maybe adding some switches to it to control the power ( No power = No lights, no teleports, doors closed, elevators wont work) and one-one switch for all the bigger places. It could deactivate those pillars what are holding level 1 from collapsing, causing that if energy has not been reactivated in 1-2 minutes, it kills everyone and blocks them from respawning... And a code panel, with a starter code, and the admin who joins first can recode it from inside, so nobody can get in without permission. Or a lua-based code system, so the map reads out the code from a text file or a lua code...
If you can get this finished and make the rest of the map look as good as what you've already made, this will be incredible. I'm glad to see you've already included 'secrets' in there, but I'd suggest you make some which are just secret rooms etc. for hiding/building/rping in, and others which are secret passages connecting different parts of the map. Other than that, just keep on mapping :D Oh, and if you ever need help doing any crazy in-map logic stuff (unlikely since most people use lua for that now), just let me know. I've done waaay more than my fair share of that on Planetfall and Cerberus :)
woah is all i can say. Haha the name is kinda funny though, it almost looks like Anal City. :P
Hey, stop fucking around this skyfall-anal thing, its not funny!
Dear folks--thanks for the suggestions and positive feedback, I'm keeping it in mind. :) I started a bit on Cronos, but I suddenly had a moment of terror looking through my compile log as I realized that I've already hit like 15% on my face limit, 10% on my brush limit, and 20% on my vertex limit. At this rate, I'm going to have to seriously cut down on the detail in most parts and average it out if I want to keep everything inside the map (and I'm planning on filling the map up in all 3 dimensions to Hammer's limit). What would you folks recommend I do?
Make the bigger houses' outside in model, thats just one entity, not (at least) 6 face... make the model then make it hollow, add a place to doors, maybe model some bigger things inside (like if you have a big interior for a bank, with a 3 floor high glass wall, then model it, do not use brushes for it!)
Keep up the good work. So far it looks cool and promising.
Nice. I Hope you get it done!
I really hope this map ain't dead :( Bump :)
Hope you don't mind, and I hope you'll use this. I just started drawing out a layout for a fire department. I got a great idea in my head, it'll be a nice FD. Might be a little big for the street, though. Keep it in mind. When I get started on it, I'll post a few screen shots. (I am not new to mapping) Edit: Q: This map is night-time based, or day-time based?
Guys, thanks for the attention and the bump, but unfortunately I think this map may actually be dead, for a number of factors. 1) The map is excruciatingly ambitious and I've already found that I hit my 20% face limit and somewhere around that for vectors, and I've barely done a minor area. 2) My computer's graphics card has been completely fried and now I can't operate anything remotely 3D (my soul bleeds over this). 3) I'm going to art school in 3 weeks. So as of now, I'm declaring this map ON HIATUS for WHOKNOWSHOWLONG. I'm really sorry to whoever got really excited about this map and might have even put in effort to help it. However, this map -is- inspired by my own original idea for a webcomic which is in the works, called Quarantine A1... So, whoever is interested in seeing how it would have manifested, and how it will in story and comic form (and boy, is there a CRAPLOAD of story behind it), let me know and I'll definitely keep you posted.
^That sucks^ Damn, this map sounds bad ass! I'd help but I'm not very good at detail yet.
hope its still on
