I've never actually used the cordon tool... I find that if i want to test my map it's easier to just put a few brushes blocking off the parts that aren't done then compile it. Plus the only real reason i can see people needing to use the cordon tool is to find out what causes cryptic bugs/lag spikes in their maps... Which i have yet to deal with.
Cordon tool does the same thing you just described except it automatically seals off the map.
So why would a cordon skybox be better than a box skybox?
Its simpler/easier than making a hollowed box. But just as with hollowed boxes, don't publish maps with the corodon tool.
It automatically makes the skybox and hides the rest of the map. as in, you move the cordon bounds over a place you want to compile, and thats it, you don't have to hide anything or put it around the whole map. Just place and compile. and you shouldn't use a cordon for the final compile though, nor a box skybox.
oh god i'm going to need so much help with this that one guy up there added me to his friends on steam but he's never online
Honestly the best way to learn is to keep creating maps. The first few you create probably won't even compile (mine never did since there were leaks and basically zero optimization). Off the top of my head the best advice i can give you is: - Use the grid. - Use the grid. Seriously, it makes life so much easier in terms of aligning textures and placing/moving shit. My first maps were done with the grid essentially disabled. They were awful. - Use func_detail a lot. There are probably plenty of tutorials explaining how to use func_detail properly. - Get to learn how visleafs work, they are an important aspect of mapping.
You can add me if you want.

In one of my large maps I learnt that if I move most of my brushes onto the grid after using the clipping tool it will reduce the amount of numportals in my compile log, not sure if this is relevant but it should be of help to you since I see some areas where you might have forgotten to optimize like nodraw and func_detail. Don't tell me he used the carve tool xD
Don't tell me he used the carve tool xD
you act like it's astonishing someone who's new to Hammer doesn't know everything about it added you, firegod
Subdivide entire map and then carve a spehere in it
Subdivide entire map and then carve a spehere in it
You crazy :sigh:

Obviously you shouldn't have the skybox material below the terrain as if just uses resources, but what if you are making a pretty much flat map, that instead of having clear-cut walls, it has a 3d skybox that makes it look like it expands for miles in either direction?
If the map itself is a box. then its fine, as long as you remove the bottom. But if you are making a map that has like a building blocking the skybox off at 32 units, and another at 24 or 16, then you want to use one that lines with the wall. 3D skyboxes are fine to use hollow skyboxes though.
wait im on steam? your just snoozin?
