Make a Lua script that starts to ramp on the motion blur and bloom the further you get from the main play area. Then have a few symbolic things out in this journeyland that confuse the player into thinking they're dying in real shocking ways like a crazy hallucination.
A road block.
A hard drive crash.
I've always liked how Far Cry 2 goes about blocking the player.
It lets them drive a bit off into the desert, then eventually it makes them pass out, and you wake up back near the map edge on your stomach.
Depends on what the map is.
Like a city one, id use jersey barriers and vehicles, or even a train crossing with the train parked on it.

Exactly the kind of unique way that I was trying to suggest, only mine was a much more sinister drug bender inspired piece of works.
GMans face pops up like in beginning of HL2, and then BOOM o_O

Problem with fences and other transparent obstacles is that you still need to shield the view at some point. Walls always make it easier, but of course it's less interesting.

Look at that shit, no getting past it.[/QUOTE]
That's what I use all the time, it starts to get a little repetitive.
A large hadron collider
I'm still voting for artillery. Lots and lots of heavy artillery.
A "WELCOME TO FARMVILLE" sign
I'd run as fast as i fucking could
Why not pull a bad company and shove some artillery signs with an overlay of a dark-blackish red then a sound saying "Turn back" or something?
How about if you go too far, you get a radio-in saying that there is an airstrike headed your way, and if you don't clear you get blown the fuck up?

Like that Halo 3 MP level where huge point defense guns will slaughter you if you go off limits. :D

Sandbox, I love/hate that map.

BF's always done it that way, although previous BF series had less fanfare involved; You'd just die after a warning about capital punishment for desertion.
