Renovations Voting V2 - Hope for Sphinxa's Great Grandma Edition

I felt kinda guilty for voting and not mentioning anything about all the hard work that went into those entries, the
least I could do is spend a few moments to sum up my views on them.
...So here goes:
Firegod's entry
I skipped this immediately, hehe. Nothing personal, just not even close to something enterable.
Gamedev & Weboftrust's entry
This was an interesting prospect, two mappers working together to get more done, and better looking in the process,
but unfortunately it appears as though on this occasion you've spread yourselves too thin.
You've worked to create a playable, almost complete map, but haven't allowed yourselves time to add details and
working on finalising effects and lighting. The lighting is vital and I think what you've ended up with is a quite dull
effect on the scene, it dampens all the colour and it's a shame because its a very big environment, the displacement
work is looking good, but again, it lacks definition and detail.
Overall, I think with more time you'd have created a much more immersive environment with lots of props and details
to flesh out the scenes, and I especially liked the coast area, it was really starting to look more believable.
Hawkeye Hawk's entry
This was a really cool idea, and I think you really did well with it. I can't help noticing, however little things which
detract from it as a whole, such as the repeating textures on the displacements outside, and inside the walls of the
lighthouse.
I vaguely recall you mentioning you'd lost interest in the project, which explains why it doesn't look quite finished, but
the light house silo door made me tilt my head sideways to ensure I was looking at it right, it just looked... Off. I do think
you were going in the rigt direction with the environmental lighting, that I particularly liked.
Hawx and Eyefunk's entry
Some areas look really well detailed, while others not so much, which gives a really inconsistent view in some areas,
where it appears you have rushed some of the less exciting areas. Apart from this and a few other details which could
have been added, such as effects and more realistic lighting in areas such as the warehouse rooms, which appear to
have lights lining the ceilings, which weren't providing any light!
While I wasn't really taken by the premise which seemed a little generic at first, you've really pulled off the look illusion
of scale here, while I must say you really should have taken screenshots at a higher resolution, a lot of the effect of the
scene is lost simply because of what appears to be he grainy, low-resolution of the image.
Menter's Entry
A unique concept, and an interesting medium to portray it, but a single poster design with a small amount of the map
visible doesn't really achieve the same effect. It is, however a great take on the contest theme, I love the idea and
execution, the map's lighting does lend itself to the design.
Omega322's Entry
I voted for this one. In my view, this map is very well made, using particles, effects and some really vibrant lighting to
bring the whole street to life. Lots of details compliment the scene, providing a really ominous setting. While I think
maybe a little more focus on the theme would have been nice, it still demonstrates the renovation I imagined the theme
to mean. The security office is my favourite part, the lighting on all the walls looks just great.
On a side note, the video would have been really nice if it was more fluid and showed a fly-over of various parts
of the map.
Salmonmarine's Entry
I quite liked this entry, it looks big, which is important, a sense of size. Some walls look a little bare, but I'm nit-piking.
overall, it looks great, but I was distracted a little by the fog, which could have been toned down. The combine soldiers
running around was a very nice touch, and the scene would have been incomplete without them.
Stupideye's Entry
This, to me, is a classic example of a map without clear focus. It appears as though you concentrated on some details, and
not others, resulting in a sort of patchwork of props and details, and leaving other faces bare or simply covered with decals.
The tiles are simply unrealistic, you must've thought they looked a little too chunky no?
What I did like was the detail you put into those areas where you spent time, such as the fain't lights coming off the consoles,
and interesting shadows in the room, but I feel you didn't attack the theme sufficiently, you left me kinda wondering where
the renovation had/was occurring. I also think you should concentrate on choosing fitting textures for your enivronment, I
wasn't sure whether it was underground or not.... I hope I wasn't too mean.
Tacoo's Entry
I wasn't sure what to make of this at first glance, I'm not sure what exactly it portrays, other than a street strewn with debris.
the conflicting lighting moods detract too much from the final scene, I think. The spotlights appear to offer little or no light to
the street and look like they were chucked in as an afterthought. The texturing is good overall, with only a few surfaces which
could have more fitting textures. I just don't think it had much to do with the contest's theme, and although it's well made in
places, others look, like I said, strewn together, simply to look messy, which isn't what I think this was about.
So yeah, these are simply my opinions at a glance, I guess. Well done to everyone that finished their entries, and good luck to
you all (especially Omega!).
We're doing rails.
If it wasn't restricted to rails it would just be a single player contest v2.
except it isn't because it gives people the chance to blow shit up, I'd rather have my character walking through a battlezone and shit blowing up than a slowly moving camera doing it for me.

Who said it needed to be slow? Use your imagination and it will be amazing!

Iron man is an amazing movie. The games are shoddy and pathetic.
Can you tell i've been listening to a lot of acdc?
We've sorted this horse shit out. We decided to disqualify Tacooo, Stupideye, and Firegod522.
After a bunch of disscussion, we realized that Tacooo and Stupideye, your entries were technically late. They were submitted after the deadline (12:00 midnight GMT). Firegod, yours wasn't really a renovation. There wasn't really any hints to what it was either. Flame me all you want, but, rules are rules.
The rest of you, this voting has pretty much been fucked up so hard we're splitting the prize. You will all be receiving $8 in your paypal accounts. The next contest will have a closed voting only available to the judges, which we need 3 volunteers.
Any other questions, we'll be on a plane to Puerto Rico hiding from the angry mobs shortly arriving at our doorsteps.

Lucky bastards. I've always wanted death threats and/or an angry mob on my doorstep.
If either of you need a large supply of amitol, a flamethower or a heavy spud gun...i know a guy...

Cool.
Oh yeah, congrats Omega, you pretty much won.
Unless Hawkeye gets one more, its a tie.
Though we're splitting the cash anyway.
Lets make a new thread and recount :v:
it does not really matter to me, let omega have the prize. I only did it for the challenge

Just to clarify, I drew that :v:
So... This competition was a failure then?
RustySpannerz;29599650']So... This competition was a failure then?
Not really, people learnt some stuff, worked together, got $8.
And this is why we shouldn't have prizes
If we have votes, it all fucks up. If we have judges, easy.
Then people whine about unfair judges, or as I discussed with GameDev eariler, bribes.
I will give 15 tonnes of set concrete to the judge that votes mine the best...
I would like to revise that statement.
I will offer a long weight for a big mug
I think the best course of action is to just say Tacoo wins for every future contest

Even though his was in no way the best quality map?
[editline]3rd May 2011[/editline]

Which is why we try and get the most respected members from around here.

public vote on some judges to vote on who should be judges.

Cash prizes, if it got high enough, people might be tempted.
The next contest will have a closed voting only available to the judges, which we need 3 volunteers.
I'd happily volunteer like I mentioned earlier, I never have time to map at the moment anyway.

i see... only one thing left to do

:v:
Can someone tell me how do you make the map just have a camera flying around looking at stuff? Like what is the camera entity that is used?
Something like this, I'd imagine: Point View Control Tutorial
Current Judges for next Contest:
GameDev
Sphinxa
Deadchicken
Pyth
We still have one more position.
