Sounds like a good idea. The shadow_control entity also needs to be configured so then everything lines up.[/QUOTE]
I think it would be best to make the base structure (mostly) invisible, and create models for each part of the base structure which are meant for detail.
And I am uploading it now ;).
I am just checking up on this topic as I am working on my school projects. ( one of them is writing a huge report ). In the evening I'll have time to see what u made.
To get things straight:
Ur now creating the basic structure, and once thats done we'll be creating details for it?
You don't have to make a detailed basic structure, just that the shapes are correct.
I think most of the time is going to be spend to guess what size everything has to be.
Just did a test run of the unoptimised version. It crashed the game :P Hopefully it won't be like that in the future. Hopefully.
The basic structure isn't that detailed btw
Brainwave moment: Rather than have a full building as a model, make parts of the building a model. Eg. the Great Hall: The pillar-like structures around the exterior - these should be models. The basic block shape and the roof - brushes. The windows on the roof and on the walls - models.
Not only will we still get the detail, but we would also get more realistic lighting than if the entire building was a model.
Damn automerge
:P, Think that could work out.
I've finished the basic layout, I'll upload it tomorrow.
The layout you sent me was about 80% accurate, very well mapped, but no optimisation, so I just stuck with the one that I was making (as that was being optimised at the time :P ).

:p, thats a very old project which never got finished :P.
Make it winter map.

Some screenshots of it currently. The vmf will be uploaded soon.
That looks nice ;).
Only I got to go to school tomorrow :(. So my evening is rather short, and still gotta finish a chapter I've been writing (which is HUGE).
But I might have some time to take a look at ur vmf ;).
Also, how did you measure the scales? With a ragdoll or player start?
Cuz either ur texture scale's really huge, or the exterior is just really small.
I used a player start. The texture scale is 0.25, but the castle is definitely not on the small side. I based it upon scales from the film locations, ie the size of the Durham Cathedral Cloisters (for courtyard scenes) and Alnwick castle (for exterior shots).
In the first pic, the player is about half the height of the walls surrounding the image, if that's any help.

Il download ur vmf reall quick :P
I have found an old effect (AFDMM) which is rather awesome. Its just like the wood, but with bricks.

I am thinking of redoing this with modelled gibs.
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
Oew, just did a quick check.
I must say, you really did a nice job with the small basic structure details.
However I am sorry, but the size of the exterior really is too small :(.
I made the same mistake with my older versions of Hogwarts.
My latest version (the onle with only the greathall) was a pretty nicely estimated scale.
The gianttower, thats where the moving stairs should be, and from what I think, it won't fit.
Also, the square structure, well its not even one classroom in width :(. I thought that building had classrooms in it?
But I think if you could scale the whole exterior up to something bigger, that would do the trick.
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
Could also be that I am wrong, its just my opinion.
IN my honest opinion, some bits of it are a bit small, yes. Other bits are the right size, however. I'll redo it soon.

No you don't have to redo it ;)
The greathall has almost the right scale. It just has to be a little bit bigger.
Remember the .vmf I send you (not the 2009 project) but the hammer sketch of the esitmated size of the greathall? I think thats a nice way to start, we can decide the scales of the other structures once we already made some bits.
I think I might be really busy this week, but I'll try to start with the greathall somewhere this week.
In the mean time, I will be trying to figure out whats in the greathall.
I know the gorundfloor has those 4 long tables, and a fireplace, and that stage and all. THere's enough reference for that.
But the problem is, that we don't know whats on top of that. I know the greathall has two set of windows, one for the groundfloor, and one for the first floor. I suspect the library might be there.
Could you (and maybe if other's might want to participate) find out what the interior of the greathall is?

Hi all, I made a blog to organize our updates, cuz this topic is getting confusing.

Abbers100, i quoted you on this blog, so you get the credit for your exterior ;).

The library is in that cluster of towers seen where Harry has his flying lessons in the first film. In the first 2 films, the owlery was located above the Great Hall.

Thanks :P
the architecture is horribly blocky.
[QUOTE=Aspen;33367067]the architecture is horribly blocky.[/QUOTE]
You should know, that that is only the base, meant to block light.
We're going to put models on it.
oh thank god.
Another Project for school this week :(
As it turns out, I have another project for school to do :(.
So I won't have time this week, but I hope I will have time in the weekends :).
Though I gotta have one hell of a report ready next week :(.
Sorry guys :(, I'll do my best to fiddle in some time for this project ;),
but can't promiss it'll be this week :(.
Anyone here willing to contribute their modeling talents? I can model for the most part using Sketchup, but it does have it's limitations...
To all, we haven't forgotten about this project ;)
We're just really busy, so we progress really slowly. (this weekend I'll have some time to create some parts of the greathall :).)
I am sorry guys :(
BUt I've been working round the clock to finish my report for school :(.
So I didn't have had any time to map.
Its still not done and I need to submit it within 2 days.
ITs darn huge.
Within a few weeks I'll have a week off and I'll have time to work on my hogwarts :).
What still remains to be unknown to me, is that the hell is on top of the greathall ( dinner room ).
Its way to tall to only contain the greathall.
Abbers, I can model static props. And for when I am too lazy to install 3dsmax, I can also use the hammer extension propper :P.
Abbers, can u make a floorplan o f the greathall and each level? Cause I don't know whats inside of it.
Surprisingly, only the Great Hall is in that building. Check out the ending of Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The Entrance Hall is destroyed, so you can now see the back window of the Great Hall, and it extends all the way to the top.
I can make props as well using propper and SketchUp. I tried to make the Entrance Courtyard, but I messed up on the cloister windows, they were too smooth for my liking. Everything else was okay though.
I'll start with the greathall when my holiday starts (in two weeks or so).
Could you find out whats on each floor of hogwarts? Cause it keeps confusing me. I haven't got the time to do alot of research and it would be nice for me to be able to start right away instead of hours of research first.
If you haven't got the time, or just don't feel like it, just say so though ;).
I've got plenty of time :P
Just thought I'd put this up:
[url]http://www.mediafire.com/?lj1s1qcc2tlhrko[/url]
You need Episode 2 to play it.
You haven't included the models, so I am not able to see what U made.
All I see are a couple of world brushes forming the basic shape.

[editline]13th December 2011[/editline]
Btw, is this the same courtyard we're going to put infront of the greathall? Cuz I don't like the emptyness in some hogwarts versions. Lets just go with that.
I have chosen to work with blender in the future, as my 3dsmax didn't work anymore and I think I should use multple editors, just to get experience with more editors.
I will start all over again with my greathall within 2 weeks.
In the meantime, could you draw a detailed map of hogwarts, with all the interiors you'd like to see in our version.
Our version should be a mix of all the hogwarts versions, only the best things should be used.
We need to sync up our idea of hogwarts, so we won't be creating parts which aren't compatible to merge.
But still, nice to see ur enthusiastic about this project :).
D'oh, I'm an idiot. I'll upload them in a sec.
I´ve found some time to do a lill research. Each picture I find has two layers of windows.

You siad only the dining hall was inside this structure, if so, why are there two sets of windows=
A physical anomaly. Look at the back window. See how far it extends up the Great Hall? The entirety of that same window is shown in interior shots, therefore, the Great Hall is all of it.
NB: The trophy room is under the Great Hall as well, and iirc, that has windows near the top, so that might explain the bottom half of windows...
