This is a pretty damn good recreation.
Glad you like it. Here’s another quick update: I’ve added the spherical... statues... for lack of a better word, to the platforms on the forward facing side of the pyramid. The texture job isn’t great, but it was pretty hurting in the original game too. The major difference between mine and the one in the game is I stretched the texture over a few faces near the top of the sides, (difficult to explain but you might see it in the pictures. If you look at them from the front, however, they look spot on. The collision model worked for them too, probably due to the concave nature of… spheres… Sonic Adventure: My Map: Right now they are static props but I might change them to dynamic props. The only reason I’d do that is so you could delete then and place your own objects on those platforms. The jury is still out on that one though. I’ve also changed the light angle to hit the face of the pyramid directly but I think I’ll change the -45 degree pitch to reduce the length of the shadows.
how long will it take for these maps to be finished?
how long will it take for these maps to be finished?

Anyhow it most certainly won’t be done anytime soon but I’m hoping to get it done before the fall.
In all seriousness though, I have been making progress faster then I had previously expected. The problems with the SDK have set us all back a little; I’ve been working with the pre update binaries, but it’s still a pain. The pyramid shrine level is about 95% done. It just needs some detail work and fine tuning. I’ve recently added the mountains and hills into the skybox, here’s some pictures: Right now I’m working on replicating the big trees, with some limited success. Once I figure out how to get the alpha channels on the leaves looking right they can be added too. Things that still need to be done for the pyramid shrine: - Tree models (3 different kinds) - Rocks - The wells from the gc version - Some kind of smoke particle effect for the fire pits - I might also add a thin bluish fog like the original. The Emerald Altar level is about 40% done right now. It’s taking a really long time since most of the geometry can’t be replicated with brushes, so I have to use displacements; it takes an incredibly long time to line up all the points with the vertices of the reference model. Ultimately all I can say about their date of completions is they will be done when they’re done.
Can't wait for Egg Carrier
how do the leaves currently look?
I’ve created a thread detailing the issues I’ve been having with the trees: http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=936997 I’m still relatively new to modeling so I’m just kind of learning through trial and error. If I could build the trees out of brushes I’d gladly do it… but that’s impossible, and certainly not desirable. I have textured the rocks – not perfect by any means but I couldn’t get very close look at them due to the limits of the level. Well we’ve improved the foliage… it looks better that it did at any rate. I’ve gotten 2 trees converted, scaled and placed here are a few pictures: As you can see, the edges of the leaves are still a bit off but it’s much better than it was. I’ve also completed the wells from the game cube version; at least that’s what I think they are. They look similar to the well in the triangular forum at Pompeii – minus the platform above. I don’t have any comparison shots from the GC version; the well is not in the pc version but I did find the model in the mess of pieces at the center of the exported level. There is still a third palm type tree missing, found only in the GC version, I’ve been able to find the trunk but the leaves are still missing – they may have to be made from scratch. I’ve also found the exit door so I should be able to replicate that as well.
I’ve finished the exit door, though there’s not much to it: Sonic Adventure: My Level: It’s pretty dark in there so I might add a low intensity ambient light source in there just to increase its visibility. I’ve found what I believe are the leaves of the missing palm; unfortunately they are segmented and not angled properly but hopefully I can put them back together again. Here’s a hammer shot: It’s just to show the levels size in relation to the rest of the grid incase anyone was curious.
*cries a little* I think I love you! I loved sonic adventure on the dreamcast, this is so nostalgic. You've done it such a great justice.
This map looks awesome, really like it! Good work :v: [editline]06:33PM[/editline] Page 2 start :v:!! I will be keeping my eye on this project by the way :clint:!
If you still need that third tree I can rip it for you now.
If you still need that third tree I can rip it for you now.
Yeah sure if you’re up for it. Been pretty busy lately so I havent given it too much attention. I think I found it in the mess at the center of the exported model from the adventure field I extracted from the ADV03MODELS.DLL. I’ve since isolated the pieces and scaled them to what I think is the right size but I haven’t tried to put it all back together, make a uv map or texture it yet. If you want to take a look at what I’ve got, It can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?g4woudazt1k Here’s what it’s supposed to looks like. The model however doesn’t quite look like that – all the palm leaves are flat. Apart from that tree there are just a few details to take care of; the biggest of which are the smoke plumes: I’m sure it can be done with a particle effect; I’ve seen similar ones on the crashed plane from Dead Air in Left 4 Dead. I just have to learn how. The other things that are missing are this small snake statue: And these square torches with the orange sprite over them: My map, however, will not include purple echidnas quoting 17th century philosophers. I haven’t added them yet since they aren’t in the PC version of the game and I wasn’t really keen on the torches myself. It looks to me like they were just added haphazardly around the map anyway. However they should be relatively easy to add if people really want them, (the snake won’t be fun to texture but at least it’s in one piece and the torches can easily be made with brushes but I’m not sure how to make the orange glow not look terrible). Once that’s taken care of I think it’s more or less ready to go. I’ll have a couple of people go through it and make sure all my textures are aligned properly, something SEGA should budget more time to in their own levels: Tisk tisk Anyhow that’s the state of affairs at present. If anyone has an opinion on whether or not to include the superfluous items or not please share it
I should have the supplies for you later this week. Edit: is there a model format you'd prefer to receive them in?
Anyhow that’s the state of affairs at present. If anyone has an opinion on whether or not to include the superfluous items or not please share it
Add them. It's not like it will have a big impact on performance, it's a small map.
I should have the supplies for you later this week. Edit: is there a model format you'd prefer to receive them in?
Awesome, sounds great. The models would be fine in .obj. I usually edit them in max so anything I can import with that is fine. In the meantime, I’ll see about adding those missing items.
I’ve added the square torch like objects. The orange glow is just an env_sprite set to world space glow, (glow08.vmt). It’s a bit more orange and less red than the SA one but I kind of like it. The other issue is the draw distance; as you can see in the images the glow is much fainter and disappears entirely at higher distances. I think it’s alright like that though. The glows would be a little too invasive if they were at full strength at all distances. Even in SA the glows would disappear if you got too far away. The torches themselves are set to be nonsolid since that’s how they behave in SA, (plus you don’t want to get your cars hung up on them while you’re driving around).
Nostalgia attack. I long for my Sega Genesis now.
Looks awesome! Are you going to node it?
Nostalgia attack. I long for my Sega Genesis now.
It's from the Dreamcast/Gamecube/PC...
Alright, I finally got the small snake statue textured and converted: They too will be nonsolid to remain true to the original. Again the textures aren’t exactly the same but it’s pretty close and I’m pleased with the result.
Looks awesome! Are you going to node it?
I haven’t decided yet. I’ll probably give it a shot but it’s not very high on my list of priorities. In the original level the only npcs walked in circles on the road around the pyramid. The biggest problem is the original level wasn’t designed with half-life movements in mind. The stairs themselves are about 20 units high which is greater than a player can climb. I’ve gotten around this by doing what they did in the original level and placing an invisible ramp over the stairs. I used a player clip brush so you can walk up it fine but objects you spawn won’t be affected by it. The ramp is almost at a 45 degree angle which npcs can climb but they will have some trouble. I did start working on a nav mesh for the level in left 4 dead and the survivors & tank were able to climb the stairs so it probably can be nodded too; at any rate I’ll make an attempt. In other news I was messing around with particle effects earlier. I added this one from Left 4 Dead 2 for the smoke plumes in the fire pits: It’s not the greatest; I think it’s too thin, (though the height, width and length are all about the right size). I still haven’t found out how to open it in the particle editor or what settings to modify. Probably work more with it in the future. If I can get a decent smoke effect there, we then just have to get that last tree in and check for any discrepancies we’ve overlooked between it and the original. Then were good to go.
Well, looks like you took care of the snake and the lights. Just to double check, these are the trees you need, correct?
Well, looks like you took care of the snake and the lights. Just to double check, these are the trees you need, correct?
Indeed, thats the one.
Alright, here is the obj file with textures included. Knux was included because I was going to work on turning him into my unoriginal edit. Silly thing is, even my edit knows he's unoriginal. http://www.mediafire.com/?ylmnujzzyjd
Thanks Glaber, your work never fails to impress. I’m certain I wouldn’t have been able to come up something that looked this good with my somewhat limited understanding of modeling alone. Here’s how the “Tree of Tikal’ looks at present: Now that the bulk of the work is done we’re just dealing with the details. We may or may not find a more appropriate smoke effect. I think the current one can work provided it doesn’t cause any performance issues. I’ve been working on adding nodes to the level; right now they are distributed in a pretty disorganized manner around the level but I’m slowly working at arranging them so the npcs can use them more efficiently: This will not be prefect: there will only be nodes in areas that are accessible by foot from the main entrance; so the upper platforms and cliff tops won’t be nodded. While the npcs can climb the stairs (I’ve added some npc_clip ramps) they still have trouble ascending the steep angel. Despite these issues, in its current state the npcs can follow the player’s movements around most obstacles which is the main goal. A group of combine soldiers even surprised me by flanking my position, which I was not expecting, (been so long since I’ve played on a nodded map).
You have 3D Ripper DX to thank for the quality of the models.
Well, the pyramid shrine is more or less done. There are a few details that are not entirely perfect – the white outline on the leaves of the small palms are visible in certain light and the smoke is still to thin but I think they're both well within acceptable levels. The level is now nodded: The ramps of the pyramid are unnodded; there was just no way to make it work; the ramps are simply too steep. Other than that the node graph extends over most of the areas accessible from the starting zone. One loose end that still remains is the level name. The file name as I was crafting it in hammer was simply the genesis project but that doesn’t seem very appropriate now that it’s finished. I had been considering using the prefix sa for the map as opposed to gm; I don’t think there’s a game mode associated with that one. sadx seems a bit to bulky. The working title is sa_ancient_temple. I had also considered sa_echidna_shrine since the map in the GC version refers to the pyramid as the “Shrine of Knuckle’s race.” In any case if anyone has better suggestions by all means share them. Now I’m currently just trying to get the media together for the release which I’m hopping will be in order within the next week or two. Almost there.
I just nostalged in my pants.
