Blender is fail if it can't make a high-poly sphere. Try it in Max, you should be able to easily pass several million polygons before it crashes.

You have inspired me with your round sphere. I think I'll attempt to make a deathstar with it.
I just crashed 3dsmax 2009. I made a 80.000 radius geosphere with 200 sides (that alone made my i7, geforce 285 and 6gb ram pc lag) then i copied it and placed the copy halfway through the original. Then I used bollean. Insta-freeze. I pressed print screen, but for some reason I couldn't paste it into paint :P
