• How long until we start getting paid to make maps?

some people pay, not for the map delivered, but for the time spent on making it.
some people pay, not for the map delivered, but for the time spent on making it.
Personally I'd rather pay in a 50/50 deal with a trusted mapper. Half at start, half upon finish. Also paying through paypal so it can be disputed if the mapper refuses to cooperate. (I.e. is attempting to scam) But there are exceptions to this.
Some RP communities pay good money for mapping. Those two edits of Evocity1 I released banked me over 2 grand.
People are idiots.
Dear Facepunch, It's time to discuss the future of our artistic talents. Is there anyone on here that is getting paid to make maps, textures, or even models? Whether is for a independent company, or commercial company? I'm interested in what steps you've gone through to achieve such a glorious task. And if you don't have this blessing, then what are you doing to try to achieve it? Maybe even show off your portfolios if you have one? Discuss!
One of the reasons we dont take payment, is basicly because it is illegal...

I never thought about that. The way he was addressing it I just assumed he meant any program made by someone else, you couldn't sell stuff.
One of the reasons we dont take payment, is basicly because it is illegal...
I say again. He was talking about level design in a professional capability, not selling source maps.

I was reposting for reactors because he didn't understand why we could get payed for making a poster, but not for making a map (selling)
Photoshop belongs to Adobe, but we can get paid for making posters and such. So pretty much, I could say I wanted a hundred dollars for me making the map over a few months, but not me having a finished map and trying to sell it? I usually have more common sense than this. I don't know why I'm not mentally here today.
I've used source mapping to gain an understanding into level design. The idea being, that after my next map, i'll move over to the unreal engine. What did help though, was putting together a portfolio of my better stuff and taking it to a games recruitment fair and asking devs to look over it.
hammer mapping experience wont help you at all in udk
hammer mapping experience wont help you at all in udk
And why not? It has so far. Also, if you read my post, you will notice that i said that it helped me with level design, not with understanding udk. I swear people must translate my text into gobbledegook and then translate it back to their own language.
Become a toilet cleaner at a games dev company and you might be promoted to mapper in a couple of years...
This is closer to reality than you might think funnily enough, I heard about this guy who was a customer service guy at Sony I think then after a few years he was a lead designer :v: Being a level designer myself for 4 years I would say getting payed for making source maps from an SDK isn't exactly worth it.
