This is really your first map?
That is madness. It is epic.
I saw you wanted reviews so this post is aiming to be just that.
For a while i had been sticking to Space build, which had grown very tiring and boring. Everything i made which was good, pretty and flyable just ended up being lost on planets where i roasted alive the second i landed. Or they would completely go bat shit insane. Like when i tried to make a Necron Monolith, on a planet it looked stunning, cold, slow moving just as the Necron's intended. Yet the second it went into space, it had a seizure and so i nuked it. But anyways, like i said i had grown bored of it.
I hate open water. It creeps me out. However i am fascinated with the sea and the creatures that inhabit the deep.
A long time a go, in a Gmod far far away (around 7 or 8 i think) a map appeared which i instantly fell in love with, which I am sure some of you may remember. GM_Comeflywithme. It was a fairly large map, with planes, helicopters, boats, pieces for all mentioned, a ferris wheel, a robot arena, a sling shot, a crane, a glass elevator, a monorail like track that went in and above the water. But overall it was not the prettiest of maps. The big one which got me liking it was the fact there was Ichthyosaurs. Lots of them. However horrifying they are, to me at least, in the map they were static, did not move an inch. Of course stand in front of them and they take a bite.
Which quite frankly pissed me off.
I was hoping for the Ichthyosaurs of old, the ones that ruthlessly hunted you down to take a bite. So i quickly got bored of that map. Ultimately taking a break from Gmod until the pay version appeared, as the only Gmod 9 i could find refused to work in multi player. And i wanted to introduce this madness to a good friend of mine.
Now, onto Gm_Harbour2Ocean. It is epic. Ok so it may not be as pretty as the likes of Evocity, but graphics are not everything. It is the game play that gets you hooked. To the point where for the past few weeks, Gm_Harbour2Ocean has become the map i load up to do things in. So far I've built a medium sized submarine, that was using the num pad, and wasn't anything particularly special. I also had an Eldar Grav Tank as a speed boat but it kept turning when i was going straight so i decided to build something more complex. But i did forget to add anything to allow my sub to go raise or descent into the darkness. Mainly because my computer, which is still HL2 spec and not EP1 or 2 spec, goes nuts whenever i use more then 2 lamps. So i enjoyed mulling about around 5 ft below the surface. Then a few days later i decided to build a tanker out of PHX parts, i think towards the end with additional bits like life support in case i wanted to go for a swim, i hit 64 props. Quite possibly the most props i have ever used in one contraption. On single player this beast of a boat which would have made Police Chief Martin Brody cry "we need a bigger shark", was fantastic. I had a constant ping of 5, and my FPS was fairly reasonable. Great success i thought. So the same friend mentioned earlier returned to the house, and i said to him "there is this map i have found, its fantastic, I've built a tanker of sorts, lets get on LAN and go for a sail".
Unfortunately in multi player my ping soared to 80 or 90 when turning, and was around 50-60 whilst moving forward. And i think my fps must have crawled to a staggering 5fps. Yet when i let him take over, seeing as i wired this sucker to the captains seat, he could drive us about and my ping returned to the 10-20's and my FPS went up. I don't get it but its probably because he has more cores and ram then i do. So then i got back in the captains seat, cause I am the captain of HMS Fukt. Yes that is what it is called. I then took him to the Oil Rig. Using a compass as a guide, the one from the Aeolus HUD. I just love how it appears out of the fog, getting clearer as you get closer to this monstrous building jutting out of the water. Upon parking at the docking strut i gave him a quick tour of the Rig. Then suggested we went for a swim. Returning to the boat we both filled up with oxygen, i then had a good/bad idea. Setting up a "diving lamp" which pretty much was just a lamp no collided with everything, and parent stooled to Solid Snake's crotch. It worked although it was pretty much a forward facing only lamp. So i took him down into the murky depths, using a strut as a guide to get us up and down. But then we went for a run around on the sea floor and lost each other in the fog. I then became heavily disoriented, despite having a compass. I ended up on the islands. So naturally upon the highest peak i slapped down the pagoda thing from one of the CS levels for shelter and surrounded it in trees and foliage, then filled a crate with bananas and oranges, then got a watermelon and welded it to the end of a shovel and used the decals to give it eyes and a mouth Wilson style. Then told my friend to come find me, but as it was the first time he had been on the map he had no idea how to find me so i built a raft using a single PHX wooden panel and some num pad thrusters. Then Lost kicked in. No matter how hard i tried, i kept going back to the island. It just wouldn't let me leave. Eventually i found the oil rig again, then he thought it would be a good idea to fire off the redeemer in random directions. Then something odd occurred, which i didn't know happened. The nukes hit the water, bounced and went skyward. The server didn't last any longer, as my prop boat was about to disintegrate in a thousand different directions. The nuke which we watched bounce came back and hit the oil rig (owned). His Gmod then proceeded to crash. Nevermind.
Then today i stumbled upon the latest version Half-Life: Renaissance mod.
Dirty underwear time.
Working Ichthyosaurs.
So where better to test this creatures then the dark waters of Harbor2Ocean.
I now love your map even more.
There is nothing worse then swimming about and hurtling out of the dark comes forth the glowing eyes of watery death. So today i decided to try a "Deep Blue Sea", using Spacebuild Model Pack Alpha 3 i began making a research station of sorts, partially above water and I'm still making my way down into the depths. Eventually the station shall be fully life supported, with 96,000 units of o2 i should be able to live under the sea for days. After sealing everything to where i am now, using the 2 level hull pieces to go down, there is currently 3 levels. The surface, partially submerged and totally submerged. I took a break cause i intend upon building a giant chain linked fence cage which would be entered from the 3rd level and possibly have more levels under and around it that are only accessible from inside the cage. But i wanted to make sure what i had already build would contain me inside safely without the Ichthyosaurs getting into. And thankfully, unlike some NPC's I've used in the past. They cannot pass through props.
I haven't screamed so loudly when playing Gmod in a LONG time.
This was more a post to you, Eversor. I mean its tough reviewing a map in itself, and what better way to show the fun that can be had on a map then telling tales of experiences that have taken place in the map. So i am sorry for the extreme length of this post, its possibly the longest thread post i have ever posted on any forum.
I have yet to test the night version, i missed it somehow but i have downloaded it too and shall try it in later on.
But thank you, for such an entertaining map, there is so much more left to do.
However i am not going to be shouting and screaming for updating, like Grolsch it should not be released until its ready.
Although i do hope you can squeeze the underwater base in cause i love underwater/underground bases/bunkers.
So to sum it up, this map is a fun and exciting map for anyone who likes building boats, submarines, underwater research facilities, Ichthyosaur hunting, naval warfare.
Actually i have just thought of something which would be nice to see, heliports at the harbors. Maybe even (depending on the height of the map, either that or you could pretend to be flying "under the radar") a small runway to add dogfighting over the treacherous waters.
I love this map as much as i love RP_SilentHill, i think this and that will be 2 maps i will never grow tired of. Still plenty of room for improvement, but as far as first maps are concerned, its simply epic. Just please do not remove anything that is already there, like the water fog. If you do please please please release 2 versions, with and without. Now lets see just what i am going to have to alter, I have a funny feeling the Ichthyosaurs and Necrons are going to make me look stupid. Nope, it was others. Doh!
Hi kingpoubar. That was quite some review you made, thank you, it was good reading.
Been looking for a working Shark/Ichthyosaurs for the map, made my own wire shark (it was just a fin in the water) but it did scary people.
I'm glad that you weren't put off by the simplistic design and instead looked at the gameplay, it was my intention to focus on gameplay from the start.
Edit:
Hi all, garrysmod.org is a pain in the...
Can't logon, just keep getting the wrong password, but it's not, 50kal also tried, but with the same amount of luck, but I emailed it to him, and it should be up on the SGC server soon, I'll try and upload it tomorrow.
Yeah I know what you mean, your map makes me want to ask for permission to browse through the scripting for the Ichthyosaurs from Half-Life: Renaissance and see what of it i can apply to the Great White/Megalodon. Even if that means teaching myself how to rig animations so it looks and swims like a shark should. There was a npc mod put out before using the Great White but it did not work at all, and the guy who did it got banned.
Slightly off topic but that is the longest post I have made since posting a review well more rant about how much Need For Speed Carbon on the Wii pissed me off. That game is terrible.
Sweet are you making a day and night version? If not you should :D
There's already the under ground base? I tried to find it with many console cheats... nothing found.
NaS
There is a preview in the beta3, but it's not the finished base, I'm not even sure if it's going to look anything like that in the final.
Update!
I'm rebuilding the entire island and cave, since the one in beta3 wasn't anything near what I wanted, but now that I've experimented and found the limits of the displacement tool (subdivide) I've begun making a second attempt, already made 3/4 of the new island and cave. The new cave looks so much better, has a more natural shape and is smaller, and has some nice hidden corners you can explore.
I'm also going to redo part of the 3d skybox, this I my very first map, so this was my first try, and some parts was good, some not.
Also, I've got this idea, that I have not seen anyone else do in a 3d skybox, I'm going to make the ships move around by using func_train, so this will be a "living" skybox.
I've been asking people about the new beta3, must people said that it was great, however some liked the old 2d skybox better, since it made the map feel bigger, and I agree with them. It's also impossible to get lost now, unlike the old version, where even I got lost sometimes, ending up at the wrong place. So I'm thinking that maybe I would release both day and night version of the final, but also a special "get lost" version without the 3d skybox to guide you.
Yea add both versions, I like the idea of moving ships in the skybox but I prefer the possibility of get lost, so I need to use a compass contraption and other things like that.
:O OK i just wanted to know it
Im so bored right now! So will there be a working dry dock in the next release?
Update?
I want to play the final
*wets pants* Dude this map is awesome!
update?
:geno:
You could add some sunken boats, you know, for exploration? Or put in a sort of big old boat that has a hole in it that a submarine camera could use :v:
Think about it :downs:
yeah that would be really cool!
I have checked the thread and found no mention of this, but I am having water texture problems. Looks fine from above, but when you go in the water everything turns white and the surface of the water has the pink/black squares.
The water texture fix does not fix it either.
Is this a known glitch that nobody mentioned, or is this a problem with my game? It's a 100% clean install that I tested it on with same results. Interestingly, it only happens with the day version. The night version is fine if the day one is not installed, but if it is they both screw up.
Edit:
My list of installed games is as follows: CS: S, Gmod, HL2, HL2: DM, HL2: EP1, HL2: LC, and HLDM: S. I have the HL:S and TF2 GCFs preloaded also, and Gmod is taking files from them despite them not being installed (as I do not own them). I do have non-source games installed also but I don't see them being relevant.
The underwater texture fix is in the most popular downloads section of garrysmod.org.
The underwater texture fix is in the most popular downloads section of garrysmod.org.
I am aware, thank you, but I specifically mentioned it does not work.

Try one of those. The second one worked for me
Is anyone else having a problem with the download of the day version?
There's a new version of this map?
GIMME!
So, little question. Is the underwater base actually built, or is it just in concept form?
Jesus Christ, it's been forever since the last update. Progress is slow, I don't have the time right now, but next week I might have the chance to finish up some things and make another release.
So, what have I spend time on instead of working on the map, well I got a new car, well new old car, a Mercedes Benz 260E (w124) from 1985, six cylinder 2.6L automatic, runs like new and can go 220km/h.
Other than that, been buried in homework and studies, got a programming project ending this Friday.
Oh yeah, been playing some Spore since the release, but stopped playing it three weeks ago, worst game I've purchase since... hmm, gotta think hard about this one... nope still don't got anything... damn, it might be the worst ever... see, this is what hype can do, make you buy bad games, I should have stuck with the creature creator, since that is the best and maybe the only good part of Spore. Oh, and EA can shove their DRM and 3 limit install up their ars...
So in Harbour2Ocean_NavalB1 there is a base?
Wanting to know..
Also, will you take upon my idea my friend and put in some sunken boats?
You know, a deeper ocean wouldn't be as half-bad...would add to the 'ocean' feel :downs:
on gmod lan partys with 10 people i have played the map
Any progress on the map? Also you said there was a beta 3, are you going to upload it?
1. If you know the people who own/have the naval play server, could you ask me to unban me? Cause I got banned for doing some accidently, with wire (I forgot to put not target players on a target finder...ended up killing a mod...) And I wanna be able to play naval mod again, it was great...
2. This map, is great, and huge, easy to get lost in, which adds to the fun (well about till the tenth time :D) Although when I played it, I thought perhaps some wreck or something could be added to some of the islands and perhaps a bit deeper water too. Apart from that though, it's a great map. :D Nice one.
any progress?
any progress?
Lots of trial and error, don't know if you can call that progress. Been working on the island, but in the beginning I really sucked at displacements, but I'm getting better at it.
Also, I'm going back to the original idea that I had about the submerged base, working on some sketches.
so your still working on this ? cool :) when are you releasing a update ?
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
