I've got to agree to this, I find my self thinking "i wonder if this could be made for half life 2" a lot. For example I would love to map where I live(Portland, Dorset). Some of these areas around here would make a perfect single player level for L4D2.
It is only recently that I've begun looking at real buildings in that sort of light, it happens often when I go out.
I look at a street or building and specific styles in the architecture, and think: "That could be interesting to do. I'll have to try it later." Trouble is, I haven't got a good memory and I usually forget what I'm trying to recreate.
I'll just have to rely on a camera instead.
I look at lighting more often than brushwork. In real life, that is.
Has anyone spent so much time in the Hammer Editor that they experience a "mapping coma"? It's basically when boredom and urge to do something else stops, your emotions go dull, your distractions go away, you map very efficiently, and get a lot done. The bad part is that when you stop, all you can think about is mapping; you can see the Hammer Editor grid panels in your head before you fall asleep. If you're not going to sleep, you get the impression in the back of your head that your house is made of brushes and the ground outside are displacements.
It's awful, but rewarding.
Theres a literal term used for things like these in Psychology. I'll Google it now.
Also, this happens to me a lot when playing games or making maps like you said. It's weird ass feeling after it.

Yes, thats it!
That grid. Every time I close my eyes, I can see that grid.
I don't get any of this and I have 2200+ hours in SDK?
3304.7 hrs
I used to have this happen to me. I would rack up so many hours from staying up at night mapping.
521.5 hrs
man i feel inferior

80 percent of it spent AFK
:smug:
I get mad when I see plain brick walls in real life and wonder why I can't do that
I have a more annoying form of this. Sometimes after hours of mapping, I just can't stop thinking about additions onto a map or interesting architecture, and those thoughts become more intense while I try to sleep. It's really weird, but it also helps me come up with some great ideas for a map if I'm lucky.
80 percent of it spent AFK

Nope. Lucky if like 10% of it is AFK.
I like to call it "Mapping Block"
For me its like I get an idea, erge, make then lose inspiration. Yus its realz.
I find myself going, Damn they must have used A LOT of overlays or decals to make this texture look like it isn't repeating. Then I realize that its real life and get to my next class.
832.5 hrs in the SDK, Not including the 87.3 hrs gained from the Portal 2 Authoring tools.
Wow, i've used the Authoring tools more then Portal 2 itself!
I remember when I got Guitar Hero 3. Those frets! I could see them in my sleep. Everywhere!
790 hours .... And No released maps (Soon, really soon) to show for it.
And 200+ hours play-testing in EP2.\

It's when you have a bit of music stuck in your mind and it keeps playing repeatedly for ages.

Awwwwww man.. :psyduck:
I often find myself, or almost always.. Especially in cities, and industrial areas, sort of de-constructing
the buildings and components in my head, I see where struts join onto crossbeams, and such, look for
where a wall is enforced and such. And then I'll try to put it back together in my head as I'm walking
away, that way I find that more natural looking structures show through my sketches, as I'm taking real
situations and real locations, splicing together constituent parts, but all in my head, I see like,
impressions of how a structure would support itself, but never the whole thing, just parts. Really
frustrating because I'll always get stuck on some aspect which I hadn't taken into consideration, it's all a
question of practice, I'm lucky in that I've always been pretty spatially aware, and 3D space is quite
easy for me to visualise in my head.
Sometimes i get chills and think thats a good idea and second later say to myself "Wait i didnt think of anything or maybe i forgot it :smith:"
Sometimes i look at a brick wall and think about the faces i cant see
after i actually learned mapping, ive payed abnormal attention to environments in all games and also in real life.
is this normal for most mappers
after i actually learned mapping, ive payed abnormal attention to environments in all games and also in real life.

Yeh. I can also mentally change a real environment to suit the theme i am looking for. Metal rusts, plants grow, brick crumbles. And then, occasionally i get the dreams. The ones where you are walking though places you have never been, a big mush of everything you have seen and done. The tough part is recreating them in a mapping program.
For example, a few nights ago, i found myself walking into a lobby. Outside, petrol pumps were tangled with weeds. Inside, the light was dirty, coming through stained cracked pans of glass. The desk was curved, an ancient phone and monitor on the top.
Of the dream, that's all i can remember, but i have been spending the last couple of days building on that, making models and textures, and trying to put it together in my head.

That sounds really cool, and looks even cooler in my head, I hope you do my image of it justice! Hehe.
I spend hours flying around an unfinished map in Hammer, looking for 'problems' to fix.
Or I spend an hour and somehow build something amazing, then do the above
if you think about it, to outside ears (people who have no clue of level design) all this might seriously sound...
strange, by the least.
