I like the idea of the walled city, gives plenty of opportunities for puzzles and platforming combat.
I like the idea of the walled city, gives plenty of opportunities for puzzles and platforming combat.
Well thank you sir.
These projects need better flow. The last time someone did this, it went so so. Here is my idea. Either choose to be a level designer or environmental artist. Level designers will create some levels with very simple brushwork and any critical entities to make the level work, no artistic stuff. They will then pass that work on with some reference material for the environment artists to finish up the level.
I think this is an interesting idea, but just giving ideas seems a bit... dull. I would much rather be able to properly contribute, I am just unsure how, seeing as you want to be the one putting together the map. Despite that I am curious to see what will come of this and will try to support the thread by giving my thoughts on what could be done with the current ideas we have. I am in favor of a post-apocalyptic world, though with barely any human population left at all. Instead of the generic shack-towns in the wastelands I was thinking of rather having the humans hiding underground. In Bunkers, in caves, in whatever hole they can fit. The wastelands, I would not like to see become the stereotypical dusty, sandy wasteland either, as that has been done too many times by now in my opinion. I would rather like to see something even more radical, lava perhaps? How about having part of the backstory, that the earth "cracked", volcanoes started being active, spewing lava and ash clouds everywhere. The reason for this is still left for discussion, but my initial thought would be the combine. They managed to create and use a doomsday device, which effectively destroyed almost everything in the world. So the few remaining humans would be rebels, attacking combine outposts to scavenge more food, water, weapons, anything they can carry back to their hideouts. Of course the protagonist must have a reason to be there, as well. I expect the protagonist to be the leader of a squad of rebels. That means we would need to establish the characters of those men under the protagonist's command as well, to ensure they are important to him/her. To make sure the few remaining lives have meaning. I am unsure of this, but perhaps we could have some of our fellow FP members do voice acting for this? Only, of course, if you decide to use my idea, or at least parts of it. Anyways, that is what I can come up with right now. I am eager to see what updates you have for us by Monday...
The year is 2065. Nearly two-thirds of Earth's ozone is gone -- not just over the poles, but everywhere. The infamous ozone hole over Antarctica, first discovered in the 1980s, is a year-round fixture, with a twin over the North Pole. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation falling on mid-latitude cities like Washington, D.C., is strong enough to cause sunburn in just five minutes. DNA-mutating UV radiation is up 650 percent, with likely harmful effects on plants, animals and human skin cancer rates.
from here I think a setting like this would make the campaign environment unique while avoiding some of the post-apocalyptic clichés. It has the potential to create some interesting gameplay - a lot of interaction has to take place indoors, in the shade, or underground. Incorporating this with a storyline seems easy enough: perhaps megacorporations have control over governments and whatnot, and while industrial processes have killed the ozone layer, the medical industry has tremendous profits from the massive rise in skin cancers. A few futuristic cities (mostly inhabited by the rich) with huge towers climbing into the clouds remain. The walled cities provide protection from the sun for the rest of the population. Other human outposts might exist underground or wherever. Just a few ideas.
Reminds me of this one Mass Effect 2 mission where if you were in the sun too long, it would cause damage to you, so what would be otherwise simple levels became much more due to the requirement of staying in shadows.

a simple idea: post-post-apocalyptic world, all humanity died. 2 sides fighting for whatever reasons; they built robots to help them defend their territories. some of the robots still "live", with only one goal: protect anything made by humans. Here, the player would start as a robo trying to find "human stuff", (human tech like coffee machine or a toaster etc...), fighting his way against the other side's robots.
Ugh, post apocalyptic, more brown and dull landscapes.
Since I seem to have a photographic memory of referance pictures... are you talking about something like this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kowloon_Walled_City

A thorough government survey in 1987 gave a clearer picture: an estimated 33,000 people resided within the Walled City.[7] Based on this survey, the Walled City had a population density of approximately 1,255,000/km2 (3,249,000/sq mi) in 1987. For comparison, Hong Kong as a whole (itself one of the most densely populated areas on earth) had a population density of about 6,700/km2 (17,000/sq mi) as of July 2009.[25]
Holy......
I used to have great reference pictures of the Walled City, don't know why did I delete them :smith: But I found some great artwork with the good ol' google image search :smug: http://stefan-morrell.cgsociety.org/gallery/404807/ Also
A steampunk era would be cool and fitting for that asian theme I think. Perhaps since the heavy use of steam and such have caused so much global warming that the water have risen. Therefore they have build the city over the water to prevent the water from stopping the steam engines.
I really like this idea.
I got a silhouette of what I mean.
That fits DC's style very well. I liked that walled city idéa, how about you live in the walled city, and have to work your way up through the ranks to finally be able to leave the city?
I vote for the walled city. It looks awesome.

Could we have picked anything more difficult?
Could we have picked anything more difficult?
one word: Deadchicken
Thanks for all the votes of confidence, hehe. Haha, I'm starting to think this is gonna be ridiculously difficult, but I'm all the more excited about it. I'll be trying to round up the opinions expressed so far over the weekend, and release the verdicts on Monday, so keep voting and suggesting while you have time! Meanwhile, I'll also begin collecting more reference shots, similar to those already posted, and hope you'll help me out there, then comes the beginnings of my concept drawings, some of which will arrive on Monday too. So yeah, I'd like to see more opinions on the protagonist, and what they're doing in this fantastic environment you've all spliced together. I especially loved the idea with the Sun's rays being harmful and such.. Although scientifically inaccurate, it sounds great..
If the place is Kolkhoz Walled Kolkhoz, then the mission should be to find out from it via solving puzzles. Found wideo of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbsPEVbcsXc&feature=related
....What?
I'd rather not have some enemies, shooting in HL2 has gotten stale. Maybe some running sections though? Running away from bad people.

Yes!
Since the Asian/steampunk theme was mentioned, I thought I'd share a sketch of a map concept I had for a project a couple of years back (It never got past the sketch stage). I've added some annotations for clarity: So yeah, an industrial structure in a crater lake.
I'm getting exited for a steam punk walled city. :D

Mind if I have a go at making it?
Yeah, anyone can use it.
Bumping this thread. It needs to stay alive :/
Sorry all, work all day everyday has been forcing this aside, please bear with me for a day or two. I'll update with the current consensus, and some drawings to compliment it.
