[editline]16th June 2011[/editline]
any ideas?
Well if you don't have a skybox make 100% sure you have no leaks. Because if any entities are exposed to the 'void' then vrad.exe and vvis.exe may not work properly.
Could Microbrushes have an effect here?
i have no leaks.
Post the compile log.
i fixed it!,

got the flickering light down.
In the last image, your texture is misaligned. The dark line should be at the bottom, not in the middle.
how do i fix it?
See? Someone who can take creative critizism! Looks better and better.

Also the unlighted areas are to dark, You have a leak somewhere, in hammer > map > load pointfile, To find out where it is leaking
in the "justify" section click on the "b" button and it will align the texture to the bottom
You need to work on your brushwork.
You have a leak.
How is this not thread-worthy, I'm looking for help. so i'm asking questions about specific problems i'm having.
There is a dedicated thread:

or i could just do this? it's a lot more organized. if you don't like it, then by all means don't read it.
And i dont have a leak! i made a block around the entire map and made it hollow, protecting everything from the void
Sure, you don't have to change your map to our liking, we're just trying to help you with somethings. But by all means you don't have to take our help.
I'm siked about this map! everything is going smoothly, i just need some more suggestions, if you're interested, download the map, play it in gmod, and tell me where i should go from here.

It has come a long way from my original post!
i look back at those pictures and say "damn, that looks terrible!"
I'll download it and try it out.

Your map looks the same aside from making it so dark you can't see anything. Your map is really, really blocky too. Almost every wall's texture is unaligned, so you should fix that.
How do i fix it being blocky?
Use more props and details, and shapes. Details in the brushes work it will all distract the play from the fact that all that maps are are just rectangles with textures on them.

I'm making an abandoned sort of map right now, I'm only making a corridor but you should take example from it.
thanks for the advice!

I took this awning/cover off of this desk so that it looks less blocky

I finished my example map for you. Here is some screenshots, if you want .bsp or the .vmf I'll be gladly to give them to you.

You should change the 'texture scale' and the 'texture shift' until it looks better.

Use Arch tool on that desk and the textures... Change them

I don't think that makes it look less blocky. What it needs is more details that help it stand out and feel less repetitive. A quick google search finds some hospital receptionist's/nurse's desks that would be pretty easy to remake in Hammer.

i don't know how i feel about that
the wall texture is still horribly misaligned
Damnit, i don't see it!
Damnit, i don't see it!
The line in the middle of it is supposed to be the bottom of the wall.
which wall? yellow or white?
