I'll try to program my own hammer editor replica, just for fun.

Hey guys, I love Source, but it's outdated. There's no denying that. Sure, you can make completely beautiful things with it, but there's no comparison to CryEngine 3, Frostbite 2.0, and other things. .bsp is an outdated way to do things, and really needs to die. Source's main advantage, light bounces, are now real-time in newer engines. Source may have the advantage of lower hardware cost, but there's a point where you have to stop supporting old hardware, and go for new. Otherwise were just holding back gaming. Source used to be the best, and I still map for it both because I like the community and because I'm used to it, but Source really needs a giant update, or Valve should write a new engine. Of course you can argue that they're updating, but not to the point Unreal 3 is, and when they do update it, it's generally things that most game engines have already done. That and Valve just adds what they need, which works for them, but no real reason for the modders to use it. I love you Source, but babe, you're getting outdated.
he's only saying this because he was the maker of the 'zwonder ops'.
nice name.
You cant really compare hammer with unity. Unity aint a game engine...

While I agree almost completely, I don't want games with their fake "Real time light" durp, cause until its doable in real-time properly. I do not want it.
(Ray tracing can be done in real-time, but with at-least 3 Nvidia workstation gpus, and that's only the graphics part that doesn't include physics, sound and AI.)

To me, at least, it's still light years ahead of what Source's dynamic lights are.
No pun intended. :v:

I'd still like proper shadows, but that annoying "Real lighting" bugs me, BF3 and BC2 are good examples of good lighting, a nice mix of "Prebaked/calculated" Lighting and the RT or Projected texture shadows.
And now legend will come in here and slap us around with his superior shadowing knowledge.

May be off topic, but I consider Frostbite 2 to be a much better looking engine than CryEngine 3. Maybe that's because CryEngine 3 was more for optimization to put it on consoles than graphical improvements (which is fine, since the graphics are already superb).

I think most modern engines (can) look the same, just tweak them a little.
except UE3, that just looks brown and plastic-y.

Oddly enough, cryengine 3 is capable of a lot more, but it wasn't shown off on crysis 2. Damn consles ruining our fun.
I'd quite like to mess around with geomod, if they ever release an sdk (they probably won't, but i can dream)

Yeh, consoles sucks... Even if CE3 is better than CE2 there's not really many graphical improvements as stated, but yeh I would have wanted even more physics improvement, but yeh, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with CE2 :p
@Thread creator: I got nothing to say, except this, godly and awesomely shared by an equally awesome person:

My college teacher gave me a bunch of tutorials for unity, but I'd rather spend my time learning the UDK or something.

Remember that bit in crysis 2 where you are in the parking garage. That was the only bit where i thought the engine felt like it had been made to support physics. I wanted the entire game to be like that.
More in fact, like crysis 1.
Sure the editor isn't the most complex and advanced tool in the shed, but the engine is fantastic and that's why I keep using it.

If you are talking about hammer then I must add that it ain't really a fantastic engine. It doe's lack a few things.
UT3 editor is better
I'm currently studying UDK, and I like the features better than SDK. However, the learning curve is greater and Hammer is easy for beginners to get into. UDK is more user-friendly, but is very broad in features.
It's a matter of taste really, both engines can get really cool results.
I think If you came in and introduced the engine without LOLOLOLHAMMAR SUCKS,Then a lot more people would have taken it Seriously.

BTW pro version costs money, you're probably not a pro though, so its fine.

I honestly believe that in the hands of great artists (and wizards) source can be the best looking engine around, it's just that we're not used to seeing it used to its full potential. And I think that's partly Valve's fault for not making the tools more easy to use. I don't mean like FC2 easy, but maybe a GUI for importing models and textures without having to use 3rd party tools.
I need to start playing with the UDK.
Like bad.
Unity is mainly a mobile engine.
iOS / Android style
The source engine is far from the best engine around, but look at games like portal, the source engine can be pushed and be brilliant. If valve could continue to develop Source SDK and Hammer editor, then I'm sure alot more people would use it. Personally I like hammer as its far easier to use than most programs and even its outdated layout is still nice.
I think valve just needs to put more work into developing it...
And although valve developers will most likely never read this, for **** sake, please make your map compilers slightly more stable!

You're allowed to swear on the net bro.
also use a 3rd party compiler or some shit.

Worth the download.

You can still get great effects in the source engine, if you know what you are doing.
