• Hammer Editor Sucks! Take A Look at this Engine!

Unity sucks as a PC platform, its good for mobile and web based games. It's pretty easy to make worlds but they aren't nearly as nice looking as source based maps. You can make way bigger worlds but they won't be as pretty. Importing content is a breeze though.
Source may have the advantage of lower hardware cost, but there's a point where you have to stop supporting old hardware, and go for new.
Valve "goes for new" with Source, I suddenly can't play any of my games.
Valve "goes for new" with Source, I suddenly can't play any of my games.
Updating the source engine breaks all 2011< games? What the fuck did they do wrong?!
OP is all like
Abandon Thread
:suicide:
OP is all like
Abandon Thread
:suicide:
he's too busy working on his SUPER AWESOM ZOMBE CAPANE!!
Well this thread gave me some laughs :v:
The source engine is far from the best engine around, but look at games like portal, the source engine can be pushed and be brilliant. If valve could continue to develop Source SDK and Hammer editor, then I'm sure alot more people would use it. Personally I like hammer as its far easier to use than most programs and even its outdated layout is still nice. I think valve just needs to put more work into developing it... And although valve developers will most likely never read this, for **** sake, please make your map compilers slightly more stable!
My compiler has never crashed. There is an issue where it will not always update windows with what it is doing, and then windows will report it for not responding, but that just requires a bit of patience.
If we are going to go down that path, look at this real time render made in UDK: Source does not "suck". It is an engine that will run on a wide range of systems. It's map editor (hammer) is easy to use and very versatile. A lot of the stuff you would need to script in other engines, you can use i/o functions for. A lot of details can be added by manipulating brushes. I suspect your belief that source "sucks" is founded on the inability for you to use the program. Oh, and udk is fully free, with no limitations. You could have at least picked a descent editor to try and argue your point with.
The only limit with the udk is C++ access, which in turn means shaders too. [editline]12th June 2011[/editline]
I'd still like proper shadows, but that annoying "Real lighting" bugs me, BF3 and BC2 are good examples of good lighting, a nice mix of "Prebaked/calculated" Lighting and the RT or Projected texture shadows. And now legend will come in here and slap us around with his superior shadowing knowledge.
Dickwaving begins. BF3 and BC2 don't use any baked lighting, and BF3 uses real-time radiosity similar to how CryEngine 3 does it, but it seems to be a lot better because Dice haven't gone around and spammed "brushes" which prevent gi inside buildings like Crytek did for Crysis 2. /dickwoven
OP is troll
ZOMG someone has an opinion. Durp. [editline]13th June 2011[/editline]
1: Hammer doesn't suck. 2: This is old news, it's not the latest technology, and you should probably look into it more before saying things like that on a forum dedicated to Source mapping?
I said its the latest tech in gaming, THATS FREE. Also this is a Mapping forum, mapping in general. So ya :/
hahahahahahahahahaha. hahahaha. haha.. oh shit. you're killin me smalls.. hahaha.. ha.. :sigh:

In fact, most sdk's are free, if we are comparing them to hammer.
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYiVkHEzThk[/hd] You can still get great effects in the source engine, if you know what you are doing.
Yes, you can, by working much harder than you should. Thing is if you want something like that, it's a lot easier to go ahead and use a different engine. I can't think of a reason you'd want that rather than just to say, "I did this in Source!", which while fun, isn't practical.

If I remember correctly, he is releasing the source code to it, so that we can make our mods using it.

But when he switched it all to deferred it took him 2 weeks, afaik his DefferredShading.cpp file is like 5000 lines long or something.

If hammer/source is so dam outdated as you say it must have aged horribly Half-Life 2: Oldest version of source Portal 2: Newest version of source If you were to ask me Source has aged quite well.
