I didn't know Saint's Row had Combine.
Also, close this thread...hijacking in progress.
Who's hijacking it? In your first post you said you wanted people to help you so I gave you a gunshop if you wanted it.
Unlike me you have no backup whatsoever why a game is bad.
Wut.
Thanks for a highly coincidental bump.
I have now fixed the skybox and water issues, plus it no longer takes forever to compile. Expect progress on this map soon.
I doubt they have force shields in the subways in Libery City
New pics.

Comments and/or complaints are appreciated.
looks good so far but i tinl you need to make it even bigger
looks good, might i suggest changing the skybox, it looks to flatgrassy...
Not bad, but not Liberty City.

If I can get a night skybox, then this will have day/night versions, I've already tried a beta for a nice day with a blue sky and it looks okay.
Not bad, but not Liberty City.
Yeah, it kind of turned into something else. Who knows, maybe I'll touch it up with extra details in the end to make it look like liberty city.
Keeping the name anyway because it sounds cool.
Just try your best to make it look not "half-life 2 stylish" if you know what I mean...
Change default water for starts
Why not focus on making one area/island detailed as shit with a crap load of accesible buildings instead of making a city of blocks?
Broker/Hove beach might be a good place to start, it also has the kickass train track above the buildings

GTA III not GTA IV.

I would really like train tracks, there is even an under-construction subway, but have yet to find a useful tutorial.
Use this as a reference. Make a brush under everything. VERY LARGE (closest power of 2 than doesn't make this look askew. (Also, might wanna do a very small section to try to compile and see if you're doing to scale.

You said you were a noob!!! :S
As much as I hate GTAIV, I do hope this map turns out to be great. There aren't many recent RP maps that have been really, really good lately IMO
You hate it because your pc can't run it.
sorry, but is terribly blocky and textures are pretty shity, it needs l4d textures or custom...
when i think of a city i think blocky, and yes custom textures would be best.
when i think of a city i think blocky, and yes custom textures would be best.
yes blocky... but that building with triangle shape looks very strange
true, that building does look quite strange
You hate it because your pc can't run it.
No, actually, I don't bother with it on PC, but i'm sure it can run it.
I don't have Saints Row 2 on PC either, i have both games on 360, and later sold gta.
The map is looking good. Keep it up.
Hears my input on the map. In MY opinion I think that the size of the map is good, and at most needs to be 1/3 larger. As I stated before work with what you have and detail the shit out of every building and every aspect of the city such as, subways, grocery stores, shops, restaurants, police department, office buildings, water treatment, power plant, bars, strip clubs, etc etc etc. This way even though its not a giant map (Evocity) it doesn't need to be, this is GARRYS mod not an MMORPG. In these maps unless theres 50 people on a laggy ass server then its pointless and even in these servers its some gamemode where you have to pay to get a fricken' car to drive around and do nothing. I like the idea of the HL2 role play theme, you could take what you make and then add on a combine theme to it in example, the previous police department and jail could be torn apart and changed into a Nova Prospect but leave the human touches still kind of intact. Though with the combine theme I find it best to use the dark, threatening, scary, propaganda type of combine style not just glowing metal shit everywhere make it feel like big brother is watching you and ready to knock down your door, every day in walking in a human citizens shoes locked inside of a place that use to be a safe haven like a great American city like Liberty City (New York) and now a prison with very little freedom except what is given to you as a privilege. I like to watch small map ideas like this and maybe if you think on it more it could really have potential, good luck and maybe I could help if you ask.

I am a noob, I cannot get optimization to work. :v: Actually I might of, but if done right how can you even prove that it really optimizes? As long as you cannot see an area it is not there, but when you do see it it is there. And cameras count, so it seems nearly impossible to figure out if my hint/clip brushes are working, did get area portal to work though.
Hears my input on the map. In MY opinion I think that the size of the map is good, and at most needs to be 1/3 larger.
Well aren't you in for a surprise! The entire area that was water will be city, a very poor or industrious area in fact. It will look best at night (there will be day and night version of this map) So it will be exactly 1/3 larger.

There will be shops, bars, and you can trust me on the strip clubs. :sax:

1. Optimization. Though I can't do it, if somebody is willing to (ya right) I know what it has to go through to not lag, for instance the entire sewer and subway aren't visible from above, and you cannot see props on the other two sides of the map, only in the same side you're standing in. It will be more complicated than this though.
Now what if someone takes combine/rebel roleplay and simply made it cop/citizen? It is the exact same thing but in a more realistic form, and while the cops may also use the combine playermodels it doesn't need all of the propaganda and posters that you see in a hundred other maps.
The best part may be the size, you will need several (preferably 3) cops to patrol their own areas.
:cop:
when i think of a city i think blocky, and yes custom textures would be best.
While custom textures are professional and a good idea, and I am very good with detailed textures and have helped many, there are several reasons why this map will have very few.
-Custom textures, firstly, take a LOT of space. Everybody knows that the Gmod site doesn't have phenomenal speeds, but VTF files have very little compression and are usually 1.4mb for one high-res texture.
-HL2 textures are absolutely perfect for the styles I am aiming for.
If absolutely necessary then you will see a few here and there, but mostly they will be used for signs.
yes blocky... but that building with triangle shape looks very strange
Anything particular you would like the building to have? A lot of the skyscrapers do need a large facelift...
Also since the helicopter vehicle was released there will be several helipads. The small hospital already has one. And last but not least, I am no longer aiming for GTA, but couldn't find a better name. Liberty City is catchy.

My PC has 4 gig of ram and 4 core processors and i can still only max about 20 fps.
It takes about a gig and a half of ram as well.
Framerates in Source depend mostly on the video memory. If you have an on-board chip then the processor of a supercomputer won't do you much.
Make. Working. Trains
NOW !
Im hyped now for this map for some reason. Get to work!
