I like the look of this map so far, the new light_environment settings really fit the theme. The underground lighting looks a lot better too.
But however, you should try fixing the odd lighting of the prop here, next to the door. And again, add sprites! They can make the map look a lot better.
You can find a nice detailed tutorial about sprites and spotlights here at interlopers.net. I'm really looking forward to this map, hopefully you'll get finish it.

Thanks for that tutorial. The weird props next to the door was just a lack of a cubemap. I ended up changing the props and adding a cubemap, I think it looks good now.
Please do not get mad. I understand that you get a lot of negative comments, but I really want to help you make this map nice. Ok, lets break this down:
By borders I assume you mean walls around the current map. This is not done and there will be stuff around it when it is done.
Sorry i might have been a bit unclear. You should try to add some borders, that makes the eye more relaxed when looking at your buildings.
I like to use some a dark brown(since they blend good with most hl2 textures)ones instead of your current concrete(talking about the ones that divide the different floors, seen from the outside). You should also make those borders a bit thinner.
And if you should try to use textures like these:
They differ from the top to the bottom, and if you use them the right way, they look 100 times better, and look a lot more interesting that just a plain brick wall.
As for your comment "It's just several boxes with textures on the side" What the fuck do I have to do to please you people? It seems like the only way to shake "lol it's too boxy" is to design some Frank Gehry building.
Your geometry is not that bad. You just need to spice it up some more, especially indoors, and you will do fine. Look at what other mappers do, try to copy that(but make it your own).
And you are right. You are a lot better than most of the new mappers around here, and I think you are doing great! But it is just as I said, you need to work on some aspects of your map.
I'm sorry for being a dick, but it seems like a lot of people like this map but then every once in a while there's a poster that comes along that starts "this map really sucks".
Anyway, are you talking about something like this?
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d58/photobug101/rpconstruct22shhhg0017.jpg
Why does your police station have dry wall textures?
Ooh, what an interesting idea for a map.
But I agree that it's a bit blocky, though.
Shit, at least it isn't one of those shitty three second floodmod conversions.
Why does your police station have dry wall textures?
The unfinished drywall at this point is a placeholder; I'm probably going to retexture almost all of the interiors.

That actually looks pretty nice. It's missing something through, I can't really tell what. You probably should try removing the one extra line/border on the top.

It is okay, i understand.
ok! This is you current use of wall textures:
outdoor:

indoor

this is one way to make it a bit more interesting using different kinds of textures and borders:
outdoor:

indoor:

as you can see the indoor have 2 different designs. The one to the left is actually 2 textures put together(using 2 brushes), and the one to the right is the bottom texture(for the left design). Use these kind of texture placement together with some sprites and you map should look a lot nicer.
NB! This was made in a hurry just for showing my point. Normally you should spend some time experimenting with what kind of textures that go together.
Sirrus, your even lightning takes away the suspense/surprise of the underground :(

What. The lighting isn't even anywhere any more, especially not in the underground.

What I mean is remove some of the lights :X
What I mean is remove some of the lights :X
I might. I'd personally be more inclined to just decrease the brightness on all of them. I might take out every other one, though.
Sirrus, I personally like what you are doing. Don't give up no matter what anyone else says.
This already looks release-worthy. Keep it up! Also on the tall building, add a pillar between the big windows.
I think I might release a teaser version of this with what's already here and a large annoying wall around it , signifying that it's not done. Like a watermark.
Edit: Maybe even today if I clean up all those damn leaks.
Don't release a teaser, do a video.
I want to wait until it's released to play around in the map.
Fly through.

I was going to do a better video (I might still) but Windows Movie Maker wasn't letting me export. Oh well.
Can you make the windows in the apartments func_breakable? With extra health so that it takes more damage before breaking (since they have wires in them)
Maybe it's not possible.. but would be good...

Looks fantastic. I am really anticipating this coming out.

Nice work, waiting for it to finish. Looks awesome. :D
Windows movie maker decided to stop being stupid; better video coming shortly.
Edit: Done. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmEw7dCNjDI
It's waaay better.
Looks alright. Textures are too repeating for my liking though. Also looks a little blocky on the interior.
add a secret, player accessible room usable by a hidden button. in that room, it would be like a nuke bunker.
:bandwagon:
add a secret, player accessible room usable by a hidden button. in that room, it would be like a nuke bunker.
I'll add, perhaps, a hidden room. No nukes though.
I'll add, perhaps, a hidden room. No nukes though.
He didn't mean a nuke button but a nuke bunker.
That would spice up a bit of the RP, with rumors of the hidden bunker.
But, that would also have it's bad side, probably, gangsters would use it has their "base".
So yeah, wait... What if the bunker can only be accessed trough the police station?
Also, remember, you need at least 3 different placed where gangsters can hide.

I really don't see how this map has boring geometry and crappy texturing. Both the geometry and the texturing are far better than the vast majority of maps that are produced by people at the same point as me in terms of time spent in Hammer. (120 hours in hammer thusfar, with only about 20-30 hours in it before starting this project). And as for the textures that aren't that good at the moment (unfinished plaster) It's being worked on; give me time. I can't do everything at once.
What you have done so far should only take a few days if you map like 2-3 hours a day.
Anyways, Here's a tip. Sprites. Use them. They make any map's lighting look better.
soundscapes? :3
