New five story high rise in the outer section. Come on you people. You demand updates and then when I do release something you don't respond for a day.
That looks really nice, and that curvy roof on the older pics looks really cool and imo it should stay.
Alright, here's the shimmy. I have to do two more buildings, one of them is almost done. One is a warehouse, and one is a small bland square building to house all of the player spawns. After that, I have to light a few buildings and add doors to a good majority of them. Then it's off to the shops, where I need to finish up a few things to make them more interesting. Then it's a city wall, and then I could be done. HOWEVER, I was wondering if there was anything else you guys would like to see. Any additional buildings are pretty much out of the question, because I'm running insanely high on waterinidicies (94%) and pretty high on brushes too (88%) BUT if there was random shit you'd like to see added here and there like a room or two in the underground, that might be in order. Of course, a v2 of the map might be in order if this gets popular fast on garrysmod.org, it would most likely contain a more robust underground, optimization improvements and maybe another building or two. We'll see, but right now I need feedback on what else might be nice to have.
I'd like to see some kind of 3D skybox.
I'd like to see some kind of 3D skybox.
That's a definite. I did a 3D skybox on the first map I ever did, it's not that hard. Which would you prefer: A) expansive rolling hills B) Expansive rolling hills w/ buildings C) A Fuckton of buildings (like gm_construct) D) Extremely mountainous C) Lakes 'n shit.
expansive rolling hills with buildings man...
Well i think it's time you added all your decals and props to make it look much better on the streets. I'm actually surprised at how big it is already, it looks great. I can't wait to explore this and tell you what to fix up in V2
B with occasional buildings here and there.
Except just small rich people buildings, not the giant apartments. MAKE A FARM!
Maybe not a farm, but buildings like the one in the city area.

I can't wait to explore this and tell you what to fix up in V2
I was thinking of adding an even bigger underground apartment complex but there are already so damn many places to live in this map I figure it would just be adding unnecessary size. Also, it would take long hours of optimization to free up enough of the budget to add that stuff, which isn't worth it IMO. For decals, I'll sort through through the lot and use the appropriate ones where necessary. As for props, I'll probably add dumpsters behind buildings, maybe some power lines/wires between buildings, I really don't know what I can add.
Looks like you haven't used much basic optimization. (Judging by the dev textures on un-seen brush faces, from Hammer screenshots and a few of the in-game shots.) You probably should due to the fact that this is partly a build map, and with many people playing on it at the same time, and building, it can get very laggy. Ignore everything I just said if you do have optimization. You should probably increase the distance between the buildings so people can't build props in the alleys and block off everyone else. Other than that, this map looks fucking great. I like the "gm_construct" feel. The same textures and such.

Also, while I agree with you on the fact that people could block off sections of the map, I just really don't see it being feasible at this point to make changes like that. I would have to tear down the entire back section of the map, change the infrastructure, re-arrange some buildings and scrap others. I hate to solve the problem by saying "leave it to the server admins" but that really seems like the only option: besides adding alternate routes into that area, I really don't see it feasible to do anything else. That's the one thing I didn't account for w/ this map: In my effort to make everything accessible by walking, I've made it extremely easy to get from your house to someone else's balcony. I think I'm going to end up putting player clips around balconies and such. It won't be the daintiest solution, but it's better than people jumping into your house. Finally, as for optimization, I've replaced all the non-visible dev textures with nodraw. over 3000 faces were change. I'm also going to get around to working with visleafs. Eventually.
I don't think that you should clip the balconies, it takes away from the RP feel IMO. If people don't lock their balcony door, then suit yourself.
I don't think that you should clip the balconies, it takes away from the RP feel IMO. If people don't lock their balcony door, then suit yourself.
In DarkRP a lot of the time it's a lot easier to pick a door than to open a keypadded door, which people prefer for defending their houses. Actually what I'm going to do is on the doors where it will fit, I'm going to add a bracket for elevator doors from the door STool and a spot for a keypad. Not only will it spice up the doorways, it'll add another layer of protection.
Sirrus im just so amazed how far this how come, its really epic.
Any plans for func_breakable windows? Not all of them but maybe a few... EDIT: not the shop windows of course :P
Any plans for func_breakable windows? Not all of them but maybe a few... EDIT: not the shop windows of course :P
This would actually be nice. I hate when I am running or something and try to escape all action-like by shooting a window and jumping out... Only to realize that it didn't break. I want a park.
Here's my problem with breakable windows: 95% of the time people don't want them to be broken and walked through and they end up just covering them with props, which looks like shit.
Here's my problem with breakable windows: 95% of the time people don't want them to be broken and walked through and they end up just covering them with props, which looks like shit.
Make them respawn.
This looks really nice! Can you add an effective parking garage? It would be pretty nice.
Make them respawn.
You're missing the point. People don't want them broken period.
You're missing the point. People don't want them broken period.
Hmm fair enough I guess...
It's rather unfortunate, the map file has gotten so large that simple tasks like saving lock up Hammer. I've got back-ups to work off of, but handling the map has gotten phenomenally difficult. I'll see what I can do, but the map might need to be stopped short a bit. This means dropping the second warehouse, spawn building, five story building (because I lost that in a file corruption) and maybe the 3D Skybox. Unless my computer perks up and this gets easier to handle, trying to work on it further will only increase the risk of more back-ups going down the shitter.
If worse comes to worse, I can help, not trying to brag my my pc specs are pretty much a compiling monster.
It's not even compiling. Even navigation without the cordon is laggy as hell. I appreciate the offer, though.
Understandable. Have you tried eliminating any unnecessary processes in task manager?
where do you get your designs do you come up with them yourself?
where do you get your designs do you come up with them yourself?
I come up with them myself.
