This is not a bad map. I might not agree with the use of textures, but I can't argue that there's a lot of unique architecture here. I'm looking forward to exploring its details (that's what she said) once it's released.
As for the flamers of this thread, you're all mature enough to know the difference between constructive criticism and throwing monkey shit. You can be critical without having to "pwn" the guy who made the map to make yourself feel superior.
Just playing around with the lighting a bit because I haven't had time to make serious progress on the map and a lot of time to burn on compiling. Here's a late afternoon-early evening lighting scheme. I like the way it looks but I'm not digging it for the final product.

That actually looks really cool, i think i like that lighting :P
it looks too orange. can you make it less like twilight,(the time, not the fucking movie) and more like later afternoon?
it looks too orange. can you make it less like twilight,(the time, not the fucking movie) and more like later afternoon?
The sun's light actually turns to a more reddish orange color when it's low on the horizon because of the amount of atmosphere it has to pass through, so I think that lighting is pretty close to realistic.
RP_Construct_Night
RP_Construct_Day
?
RP_Construct_Night
RP_Construct_Day
?
Certainly possible.
Day would come first, then I'd do a version with street lights and more outdoor lighting for night.

Might be OK to call them RP_Construct and RP_Construct_Night and then have street lights in both - but in Night they are enabled?
Or maybe have _Day too to show there is a "night" version available.

We'll see. At this point I want to get this map released ASAP. I'll add niceties like a night version and the things that go along with it later.
Sirrus, can you send me a fullbright top view of the map? It would make it a lot easier for me to see the entirety of it so I can sketch that map for you.

why not add a feature that will change the lighting (day/night) of the map with a push of a button clientside?
or is this not within the limits of hammer?

I could add a button to turn the streetlights on/off but changing the environmental lighting, to my knowledge, is impossible.
Skybox definitely isn't possible.
add a 3d skybox i would like to see some buildings in the background

Same style buildings or the apartment block buildings like in GM_Construct?
apartment block, it has to be very like construct.

Yeah, and I really wasn't looking forward to doing a whole bunch more buildings and fooling with Propper/Pakrat :\

It isn't impossible to change the light_environment's lighting. I believe it has something to do that it has the same Outputs/Inputs as regular lighting, so I believe if you do something along those lines you can get an effect of changing the time of day...

and add a skybox that is suitable for both day and night settings, and either make the map's day/night run off a button, or a timer.
I would really like to see a timed day/night change.

It would be a lovley feature for a map to have but i fear it would create uneccisary lag, I would love it if you tried it and tested FPS change and things and if its not that great of a lag increase Id love to see it in the final map.
It won't affect FPS as all the client is doing is fading between lightmaps. You'll have to name the light_env entity though, and it only fades in and out brightness - not ambience.

and this means that I am D-O-N-E with making buildings. All that's left to do now is:
Finish cleaning up the underground shops.
Light a large majority of the buildings.
Put doors in door frames.
Check over optimization/playtest
perhaps add a few underground rooms.
and then I'm done!

I'm so excited! :>
There will be probably another flame war starting when people will see this but hell.
Sirrus you need to learn that criticism is criticism. Many people think that they have right to tell you how the map SHOULD look, now how it CAN look, to look better.
I have learned that you can't just simply try to argue with guys who give you criticism, because, guess what, they will always win.
You need to learn ignoring.
Also to those guys, that he does not listen entirely to your adivices does not make him selfish or unexperienced, how the fuck you expect him to change almost whole architecture, only because you find it boring?
For me this map is very fucking awesome. And I am so waiting for it.
Also check your PM's.

Hey thanks man. Thanks for being cool.

Several mappers with years of skill have taken the time to give a lot of important advice, ignoring it would be plain rude, arguing it is no better. I tried the same when I was new, it is a new-mapper-syndrome way to respond. Ignore the useless posts, take the advice for granted.

Please stop trying to bait another argument.
Arguing on the internet just produces bans and hurt feelings with nothing accomplished and no one the wiser.
I smell an ALT

Trust me, he isn't. Reread his post.
I smell an ALT
Sorry, that was me. I had beans for lunch.
I'm not talking about ignoring everything a mapper/helper says.
I'm talking about ignoring bullshit, such like changing whole architecture in map, only because someone is artistic, and wants round buildings on 500m tall wooden planks.
Actually the way he told him to fix the architecture wasn't so friendly.
Does it really cost that much, to say his 5 cents in a nice way?
Maybe you don't see this, but it's really different when a person tells you that:
Those buildings are rather boring, why don't you try rounding their corners or trying texture?
Here have a reference pictures, try making them like those.
Sirrus's architecture is fucking awesome.
Even if those buildings are not some artistic shit on wheels.
