it is fine you dumb shit. remeber that this is just an wip map !!!! :bang:
Calling something a WIP doesn't excuse it from having it's flaws pointed out, which is exactly what I did, in a perhaps rather blunt manner. Thanks for the compliment though. It's always nice to be called a moronic faeces.
Ok, Sirrus. Your map is clearly not done, and it needs a lot more work before it is. What you should do is make a plan, draw up the layout and design of every building(including it's functionality) on a piece of paper. Try to make each building stand out in its own way. Do not make it entirely square(or boxy if you like). I know that you are trying to capture that construct feel, but to capture somethings atmosphere you do not need to copy the architecture exactly. Remember, construct were made for building, not as a RP map. But please, do not get me wrong, you can pull this off well, it might be a nice map to play. It is just that i really do not think that you should entirely make construct themed buildings. Think of something new! Originality makes a map good. Also you should really change that skybox-texture and lightning settings. Have a look at: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Sky_List
As I've said before, environmental lighting and skybox will be worked on when geometry is finished.

I like the map. And just remember, if these guys care enough to write out 300 word comments it must mean it has potential. Keep up the good work. You'll have my download anyway.
Augh, optimizing is a bitch. Even with nonvisible faces nodrawed and almost all door/window frames and map details func_detail'd, a full compile (even without HDR) is taking ten-fifteen minutes. Now, that's better than the hour and a half before optimization, but I can't help but feeling it should be going faster.
Compile it without lights since you are worrying about layout right now and when you are doing lights, compile with lighting on.
Compile it without lights since you are worrying about layout right now and when you are doing lights, compile with lighting on.
I've been compiling with fast light but I really want to see it with full lighting. Edit: This map works with Gmod! You may laugh, but I had some big problems getting my first map to work with Gmod. I'm pretty pumped, besides the weird skybox everything works fine. Also I got a full (sans HDR) compile.
I have to agree with Sirrus, you guys just told him its blocky and not how (specifically) to fix it, OBVIOUSLY he's not a great mapper, just because you guys can do much better doesn't mean he can. Sure you can whip out a detailed map in 5 minutes, he can't, get over yourself. As a better mapper you have the responsibility to teach them what to do. If you don't want to teach don't say anything as you're just wasting your breath and space.
You don't learn by being baby-fed. You learn by being told "It's shit." over. And over. And over again. You'll keep getting told that until you realistically look at it and see what's wrong and learn how to fix it.

Father tells child the drawing is shit. [Repeat indefinitely] Child becomes great artist. Am I missing something? Edit: It's not that I entirely disagree with your approach, but if every single person here judged new mappers against a 100% quality standard and gave completely honest responses based on this, you would need absolute, complete zeal to become a mapper. You perhaps end up with four legendary mappers at the end of this process and a lot of people with hurt feelings that gave up mapping because they couldn't keep up with expectations. Now if we start from the ground up with someone new to Hammer and Gmod mapping, encourage potential, point on places for improvement and be generally supportive, ramping up standards of expected quality as a mapper grows and improves, then we get a community of a few really good mappers that passionately seek to improve their art to absolute perfection and then a whole bunch of average to above average mappers with a waaaay more happy community, to boot.
Yes the growing up part and self experimentation.

Fuck. This is Facepunch. Their criticism is harsh, yet they have tons of good mappers. So I don't know why I stick around here. I blame on me joining in '08, a half a year after starting mapping, and people seem to be getting harsher and harsher. All I'm saying is that we should be a tad bit nicer. I mean, calling it completely blocky is true, yet I think it's primarily the textures. Textures can and are making your map look bad. I do know you are going for the construct feel, but... At least make the textures vary from house to house. Like make the bricks change. That might spice it up a bit. On a somewhat unrelated note: I want mapping kings back.
Then do it.
Ok. Notice how it has decent lighting, detail, a consistent set of textures, and props. Something that this map completely lacks. And all this took 5 minutes.

On a different related note, I'm not saying there's no place for harsh criticism. I think what I've seen so far is an excellent balance. The people that are saying my map is good outweigh the people giving harsh criticism, so I get a reason to keep doing the map even though there's plenty of people tearing it a new asshole. Also I think I'll go try out some new brick right now. [editline]03:45PM[/editline]
Ok. Notice how it has decent lighting, detail, a consistent set of textures, and props. Everything looks fantastic so far. This is a hell of a lot better than anything I've put out of hammer.
Sneaky peek at what's being worked on right now.
I don't see the problem with the textures, after all it is rp_CONTRUCT
I remember an old thread on detailing, can anyone find it? I had no luck.
Nice, but is it really nescessary with the door in the middle?
Oh, there's like a window between the two doors that opens into another room.
Ah, didn't see that.
Stop using white lighting! It's nasty.
Stop using white lighting! It's nasty.
As stated probably more than 6 times already, he will improve lighting LATER. When he is done with the brushwork.
Ah, didn't see that.
yeah, it's kind of hard to see behind the door. Update: Jail cells. also I'm waaay to psyched about how the police bunker is turning out to keep it in the confines of Hammer.
I like it... alot
The jails look nice but make sure you change the other doors 'cause they're the same.
add a brick sewer system.
I really like that idea. I wanted some way to get from outside the town walls to inside without going through the town gates, but I couldn't figure out the best way to do so.
Last time I checked, construct maps have no doors, only door frames
Last time I checked, construct maps have no doors, only door frames
I think I might release a construct version of this when I'm done with no doors, but it's completely, 100% ridiculous from a DarkRP standpoint to not have doors.
