• Your feelings on your first map and what was it?

-Combine metal box -Single Red Light -Metro Police -Zombies -Crowbar That's It. That was several years ago, and just this week I started to get back into mapping, and am making better (Though nowhere near as nice as some seen above) Right now I'm working on one where you go through a series of tests run by a sadistic, evil serial killer. But I've not made much progress because I'm thinking of Ideas.
@Chaotic, i think there is an idea generator around - Seriously. @Phantom, Well it was first map so no we won't cry :P. @Ep: Looks good for a first map @J: Just if i had L4D2 @Hol: Yep :P.
It was a giant clusterfuck of a map for sven co-op. I would probably deny ever making it if asked.
haha, everyone is talking about their first maps which they made way back then. I just started working on my first map, and its terrible. though, its interesting to see how everything works.
My first and only map was a huge flat snow map with roads and an airport. And a brick house in the middle of the map. You can probably imagine how ugly it was :v:
I worked on a gmod map and everything was on weird units so its was a bitch to work with later. Then I tried to remake it better until I remembered I hate gmod. Go figure.
a 2.5 room map, with a vent system that went nowhere, with everything made on a grid size of 32 and a wooden box (aka my bank vault) containing heaps of lasers. For CS, made in worldcraft.
First map, was a failed attempt at re-creating a mental institution, secret CCTV Rooms, 32 Units thick doors, cheap scare tactics, using flashing red lights, blood splattered walls and fleshy gibs flying out of vent systems, needless to say nobody I had shown the map to shat their pants or anything. I then moved onto more abstract map designs.
My true first map was in the L4D SDK, it had a crate, a triangle, and a box. No skybox, I was wondering why the sky did that. But, my first public map was this L4D one, never finished though. my first map was a hl1 map. it looked p good except the walls were paper thin.
I remember my first map dated back to around 2007-2008, it was called gm_Scream. It was a WIP and I had a thread on the subject which is now long gone but I started it around the time horror maps were just starting to be a big thing. I always thought of remaking it since the files are gone as well. Under a different name now that another gm_scream came around. I still have some screenshots from what I had, it wasn't anything special and when I look back at how I made it I cringe at all the leaks and problems it had. Counter-Strike 1.6 intented fy_ map, that had 2 imaginary spawn points without info_player_starts, a wall to divide them with a door in the middle. The door was a brush tho' and I always wondered why didn't it work. :tinfoil:
My first map was a Counter-Strike: Source de_ map that only used some two or three brick textures and the "skybox" was made with a prefab that has a sky in it. The map was named de_mansion, and I had a lot of fun playing it with a friend of mine... should remake it, some day.
oh lol i also remembered when i made this map full of displacements on source and tied all of them to a func_physbox and wondered why the map didn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A room with a concrete texture on the floor, brick on the walls and plaster on the ceiling with about 5 pulsating multicolored lights making a sort of disco effect.
I started my first map only a few days ago. Still working on it. It has a leak, but I dont know how to fix it. Im getting Sphinxa to give me a bit of help with it.
Good god. My first map was insanely blocky. After all, it was [B][I]made[/I][/B] out of blocks. [img]http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/5962/gmtetris0052.jpg[/img] Looking back on it now I did so many stupid things. For starters, every block in that picture is a separate brush. :v:

i made my very first map while sitting next to my brother who actually knew beginner stuff in hammer. it was some old mental hospital (originality :downs:) you would start out in some janitors closet and there was a door to get out but it was blocked by planks from the other side. you'd have to get out of the room through a ventilation duct and then you came out in a corridor leading into some surgery room or an office. the whole map was dark as shit and it was actually pretty scary because he had made random spawn points for zombies EVERYWHERE so at any given time a zombie could just pop up right in front of you and slash you. it wasn't really that awful, it was just that we made things with a grid size of 1 and carved. just really horrible techniques. my first map that i made on my own was a css map that was just a dev textured room inside a bigger room. it looked like this [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/mappe.PNG[/thumb] the red things are doors, the blue things are thick glass and the black lines are walls. the ct spawn was in the bigger room and the t spawn was in the inner room and me and a friend would always be terrorists bunkering down in the inner room against like 16 cts. it was really fun.
My first maps were actually not bad, my first one was a warehouse based on Far Cry 2 and my second one was a maze made out of grass textures in the shape of my then gaming group CWG. It was full of carved tunnels and one way windows but the lighting was really good on both maps.
My first map was a brick room with a single light, a barrel and a fence, based off the "my first room" tutorial on the Dev wiki. I recall my second map was a Combine-ish room with one of those huge Combine light props because I didn't understand scale. Then I enclosed the entire map in a skybox brush (not a hollow box, a solid brush) and wondered why everything was black. Ah, good times. :rolleyes:
