I'd say go for it anyway, make a map with tropical islands and coral reefs and [B]no[/B] sea base.

What? No he didn't, he just said that you can't have a sea base in shallow water...
Your textures are ugly. Not all of them. But that dark rocks texture for example, no not the concrete one. They look like they are from some old game.
Original idea, could have been done better though.
You need to have a reason why you can't go higher than the limit, eg, have it in a rock wall around the edge and a trigger hurt at the top (With a warning in the base that the scuba kit doesn't work at lower pressures)

IF the sealab contained transparent glass and the water has a surface. You can totally build one, just without windows. Also if the map had a water surface then that would limit how deep he could make the water. At a certain depth, you begin to see breaks in the surface brush (or what ever its called).
Besides, the map is called gm_sealab not a gm_tropics.

Gm_coral_islands, hasn't been taken yet.
I don't see why you would be wanting more water maps, we don't need more of those, we need more [B]underwater[/B] maps, like this one.

You have totally thought of something I was forgetting about.
Instead of using transparent glass brushes, I can just make them models! Damn why didn't I think of this, lol. I will start working on it and let you know how it turns out.
If this works, it will mean the possibility of having a SURFACE as well! Haha, thanks for your input!
EDIT: I just tried it. :( Doesn't work. The brushes still glitch out and disappear.
brerben i forgot to ask you something about your map can you make a lost city under the water something like the lost city of atlantis that would be cool to go with the base coral reefs and caves :3

Also, expect there to be a new underwater base map in the next few months. I'm taking all of your suggestions and trying to incorporate them into a new design.
Not exactly First Underwater map but the best one.
brerben the only suggestions i got is
1.coral reefs
2.long lost city like ( lost city of atlantis )
3.under water caves
4.some bubbles coming from the grounds
5.small and large crane inside the base
6.some airlocks if you can make them
7.some underwater canyons
8.more buttons with underwater music
9.two or more underwater bases
10. under water whirlpool if that ca be done too
thats all i can think of that would go well with your under water map
and fish, dont forget some fish! :D
This really is pretty awesome, a great idea too.
I LOVE the water effects, like the surface of the water when your in the sealab place.
If i were to suggest improvements i'd say make it a bit more busy, add some underwater caves and shit and mabey change the floor textures of like the sea bed, the relfections on the sea floor are awesome, you could also make like an airlock or something, that'd be epic.
I dno, how possible that all is, i've never even attempted to make a map hahah.

Filesize is big because of animated textures? I think that effects loading times nastily too.
Sounds like it's badly compressed and looks like it has bad mipmaps. (the caustics I mean)
If a version2 was to be made you need to make it accommodate building a large sub and getting it in and out of the base..

I was going to say just that, it looks too boring. The concept is great, and I hope this isn't the final version because it doesn't look like much of a lab or anything, just like an unrealistic testing map.
