How about some realism. Perhaps that one can destroy the handle/lock part of any door to "unlock" it.
Here's an idea: A map which has triggered stages of destruction - like the road above, maybe takes earthquake damage over time while playing the map...
Do it on a bridge like this:

How'd you do that? I request a tutorial.
I'd take a guess that he exported the animation from 3DS Max.
What if an overhead cable-cart is to snap, falling, and breaking the bridge?
Well just in case the bridge idea doesn't work out, how about a cavern? Or a network of tunnels?
The survivors (you said L4D right?) are in a tunnel (perhaps they were chased in there?). After wandering around and getting lost, for a day or so, the come across a dead end but it is jammed with dynamite (I'm terrible at coming up with excuses but let's say there was a bunch of archaeologists before the infection working in the tunnels and they forgot to remove the charges in their panic). In order to proceed they have to blow the blockage, however in doing so they alert the horde and cause the tunnel(s) to become unstable....you could have roofs collapsing, swallow holes appearing etc....you get the idea.....
Just trying to provide a backup :P
(Although I just realised, what I typed may be a lot more difficult to pull off.....:/)

Make it like a physics testing lab or something. (not physics map but just an area that represents it.)
Or you could make a super big one and have the player be "tiny" and roam around on the computers and shit.
Tiny - No
headcrabs - Yes
Put them in test-tubes :3:
