clipping brushes in a new VMF, I know what I'm doing.
Also you say you're clipping in a new VMF, why are you wording like that?

Decause someone said I was carving displacements, I'm not stupid. The next version is a different, I'm compiling at the moment.

So, just say you're not carving displacements, judging by your first attempt I doubt this one will be any prettier.
Updated OP
i like the idea of this but you need to make your displacements better no offense
V2 still needs a lot of work.
Still those displacements do not look that good. And the lightning also needs improvement. And get some other textures in there to, it looks really repetitive.
Your displacements still look as if they could be used as surgical implements.

I suggest making your displacements look more like this. (Sorry for HDR rape, didn't have much time to play with it.)
Made with less than any effort and better than OP :v:

Would you mind releasing that? It looks very nice.
Just improbe your lighting first
This is why the gmod community is a joke to other mapping communities.

Don't judge a whole community on one user.
Don't judge a whole community on one user.
It isn't just one. There's nothing wrong with low standards, except that there are very few really good looking Gmod maps and why so many are flatgrasses and contructs, The Gmod mapping community as a whole doesn't come close to the average quality per released map as most other Source games, and some of the really nice maps are overlooked as well.
Most people don't need good looking maps to build on.
And gmod is mostly sandbox so they want construct maps tbh.
Have you seen xhizors maps?

Don't think I've seen his maps, but is it impossible to have a half-decent looking build map with no obstruction, maybe through a 3D skybox? More RP maps perhaps, with less rp_downtown_v2?
You know what's way easier and looks better? Use this http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?p=8

so what, you want me to make hundreds of brushes for a map this size, I'll redo the bumpy area and gorge, but rugged mountains are by definition spiky.

Yeah, we want you to make hundreds of brushes and have nice displacement. Not just some displacement made on 1 big brush or even few. Just make it smooth.
P.S - With each release of this type of map, name becomes more silly and silly. (Flat, unflat, uneven, flatwater, watergrass....
I wonder what is next.
Unugly?
Anyway...Kingy_who, it might be an idea to follow tutorials on displacements.
I did it too, I failed and gave up on displacements as a whole, I only use them when there is no other option left.
No offence OP, but this is one of the worst maps I've ever seen.
Rather than make a pointless gm_construct or gm_flatgrass alternative, you've made something worse than the both put together.
Surely you could see when making it the displacements look like absolute shit?
the lighting was chosen to make the displacements look curvier.
Displacements are easy as long as you put the time in.
Whenever I make them, I set the radius pretty high and the move distance (whatever it's called) to one unit. That way you have a lot of control and you can't make them pointy.

I've decided to use a lot more brushes for the next time I show you pics, just had a test run, and decided I need even more. It will look good once I'm done with it, just needs time and effort. for the final version, there will be the mountain, bumpy area, gorge (better looking than they are now) and a few buildings.
Also I've seen worse maps.
It's not necessarily the map that's terrible, it's the way you've done it and the incredible lack of effort and detail you've put into it.
At the moment, I disagree.

Just because he can handle displacements better, that map is a lot less practical than mine.

I've got a small bit of my map at that quality aswell. aiming to get the rest of my map like that

He can handle displacements better?
This would be because he is a better mapper than you.
And a lot less practical?
Please, explain the practical advantages of a map that consists of several brushes and about 3 huge, very, very badly done displacements.

My latest uncompiled version.
anyway, I'd have a hard time building on area that isn't flat, even a little flat area helps.
