That's pretty much what I made the thread for, haha...
Can't wait. :v: [editline]09:47PM[/editline] Got a question: Do the maps have to be based on SBEP, or the other way around maybe? (Are they not allowed to be based on SBEP?) Just asking, I have a small asteroid base that has a large docking port of MedBridge...
Not to sure i think either or is fine mines not based on anything SBEP but im sure if it was it would still be fine. Anyone else got any thoughts on this?
released: http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?p=18993811#post18993811
THANK YOU! :D I love it!
hm, this looks like a decent place to find help. I've been trying to make a functional spacebuild map for ages. none of the tutorials I've found seems to produce anything that works properly even when I follow them to the letter. I'm a competent mapper normally, but spacebuild just outright refuses to work for me, any chance any of you could post up a complete walkthrough for making a single planet and functional spacebuild map? I bet it'd be really useful for the rest of us :P thanks in advance Calypso
Bynari actually started on a tutorial a while back, but never finished it. He got up to how to make the models in XSI, but that is it.
Yeah, I'm working on a new set of tutorials. I'm thinking of either revamping the Wiki article, or setting up a whole website on SB mapping. Either way, I want to make one big repository of SB information so that everything anyone would ever need for SB mapping would be easily accessible.

yeah, actually Bynari's tutorial was the best I'd found so far :P it was just the fact that it wasn't finished that kinda got in the way for me. very clearly written and well explained. finish it dude :P I also took the time to decompile and examine your maps, though I find things confusing with stuff like hint-boxes around the planets. nobody mentions that in a tutorial....
You do that after adding in the planet prop. That tells the player what planet they are entering, I think. He did release the .vmf of gm_new_worlds_2, that should help you alot with Spacebuild mapping. And it is alot more accurate then decompiling maps.

I'm not entirely sure why I put in the big hint boxes at this point, some half-assed attempt at optimization, just because it was my second map, and I really didn't know what I was doing, haha.. As far as decompiling my maps goes, feel free. I do it all the time to others' maps; it's how I learn how to do stuff. "we will add your distinctiveness to our own," if you will. Also, I plan to release my spacebuild VMFs when I release the tutorials.

yah, I understand how its technically meant to work. but for me it just plain doesn't. I'm reasonably sure I have Spacebuild working well as a gamemode, because I can load up maps like sb_gooniverse with no problems. doing the same method to load my theoretically complete map doesn't work very well I routinely decompile and examine maps to find out how they're done :) I don't release the decompiled map or anything unpleasant like that. I've not seen any difficulty with the Vmex decompiling maps, nothing ever seems to be missing or broken.

Tutorials are on the way soon, working on the website now:
Cool. Can't wait.
Ok guys, brainstorm session. What tutorials do you want for the website? So far the tutorials I have written are: Planet Building Atmospheres, or logic_cases and You (sb2 & sb3) Asteroid design Planet Shells in XSI Starfield Skyboxes Packing resources with Pakrat I'm going to launch the site with these tutorials, though there's definitely room for more. What other topics would you like to have covered? Also, if anyone out there is good at mapping and would like to contribute tutorials to the project, feel free to drop me a line! Tutorials don't necessarily have to be Spacebuild specific.
"How to Make Revolving Planets"
Well, monkeyjoe made a nice "How to make animated textures" tutorial. Maybe something like that for Spacebuild? Asteroid design: fuck yes. [editline]11:18AM[/editline]
"How to Make Revolving Planets"
"How to make frozen objects not screw up when the planet slowly revolves, leaving the objects behind..." :science:
"How to make frozen objects not screw up when the planet slowly revolves, leaving the objects behind..." :science:
Yeah. I wish they wouldn't do that. Especially since my current spacebuild project has a revolving planet.
Maybe whole planets wouldn't be practical to move, but we can certainly have smaller objects wandering around, such as asteroids.
Yeah, revolving planets wouldn't really be a great idea, and you'd probably need lua to move said frozen objects around with it. Asteroids are good, though.
You could have rotating planet shells, which from space would give the illusion of a planet rotating on its axis. That's pretty easy to do.
You could have rotating planet shells, which from space would give the illusion of a planet rotating on its axis. That's pretty easy to do.
It's even easier just to add an texture translation animation param to the texture to give the same effect.
Texturing (using textures that not only look good but sorta work together like not lava and snow) so not really a tutorial though it could be but more infromative
Yes, another good tutorial: Texturing, not only for Photoshop, but for other things too. Mind if I make a tutorial? Could you send me a link to the website? Or do you want it in a .pdf or something? I have some very good texture creating tutorials for Paint.NET.

If you have the tutorials as plain text and images that would be best, but I'll take whatever format you have them.
Ok sure, I will start on one now! [editline]11:49PM[/editline] Just wondering, are you accepting any kind of tutorials? Or only Spacebuild texture related ones? (I have good carpet, wood, tile and metal creation ones, all different types of difficalty. [editline]12:04AM[/editline] Another thing, video tutorials...?
I would help map, if someone could teach me how to get a space skybox into my hammer. Do they have to be in EP2?
