That could still mean that your copy of portal is permanent. 'until May 24th' could easily refer to how long it's free to get it rather than to play it.

Unless you look at the free weekends they like to do. It is free for the weekend, but only for that weekend. After which, it terminates itself.
It could go either way, hasn't anyone emailed a relevant valve employee about it?
I'm hoping for a mass account banning for anyone who gets it now while it's free.
