The camera/view is under the displacement.
You're name fits you perfect!
I'm still looking forward to it, very sexy :D
Why would'nt he use displacements to make the terrain...
Why would'nt he use displacements to make the terrain...
Exactly! Does this look like burshwork to you? :v:
YOU ARE THE BEST!!! i was wondering when you would give us an update on your progress. I'M SOOOO EXCITED. but don't do anything dumb like make it a gamemode or anything.
Hah.
i agree fully
I like the map so far. It's a little underpopulated so far in my opinion. I look forward to using it(if my computer can handle it that is).

Wow this is a popular thread! And I just posted! Wow I am so epic.. [/sarcasm]
I can't stop thinking about the legend of Zelda when I look in this thread... :P
That... Is... A... Lot... Of... Polygons... *faints*
I'm getting closer and closer to complete the map. I started mapping on it again yesterday, and now finnishing the basic structure. Which also involves that i need to tune all the walls connected because they are creating one or two extra polygons to much. I'll demonstrate here :P It doesn't make much difference if 3 blocks are optimized, but when like 600 are. It can change the FPS from 30 to 50-60 on lowend PCs.
Just make sure that you put some vis blockers inside the displacements so that the renderer does this: Instead of this:
Yes we wouldn't want that to happen would we... :eng101:
nice map :D
Sweet! Sorry, but is this going to be a multiplayer map? I think that it'd be really cool as a single-player thing - it could even be a whole mini-game all on its own. Although it'd probably make too much lag, you could have it be a giant, hour-long armageddon between the Combine and the Rebels, with you leading the Rebels. Huh? Maybe? Reminder: Make sure that each section/biome is, in a way, its own map. I mean that you should have some hidden caves, secret passes, or stuff like that. Every area should as good by itself as with the rest of the map. The only picture in this thread I can see is the first one - can you guys see the pictures?
Make a server, join a server, or just play in single player. Despite this being totally epic, it's still just a map :P
If I could ask you a question, is this map going to be open terrain, or are you putting buildings and such into it? Either way, I'm still really looking forward to this.
This is gonna have to be areaportal'd and fogged so much to prevent lagginess. But I wouldn't mind getting it when it's out - even though it's going to be at least 100 megs due to it's size..
100+ megs is worth it...

It can possibly be if there is a lot of custom content zipped up in the bsp.
Source engine don't like huge map with huge brushes. I recommand not to try occluding vision with brushes. It's possible to make good map without vision occluder. Source can render tons of displacements.
Or not. And a map like this will HAVE to have loads of custom models, etc, because the vanilla hl2 models kinda suck...
Things are going a bit slow right now, upcoming exam etc. Just so you know. :P Oh and the maps preformance is better than many think is possible.
I can't wait to see this finished!

I can't see the latest screenshot you posted. Oh well, I'm sure the map is coming along just fine.

Source can render tons of displacements.
You fail to realize that even though the Source engine can "render tons of displacements", not every computer has a quad core processor in it. When building any map, you always want to have it optimized to the best extent no matter what the size of the map is. You also fail to realize that even if the computer doesn't take a frame rate hit from rendering everything, people are going to start having horrendous frame rates when people start building contraptions all across the map. A large map with visual blockers is far better than a map with no visual blockers ANY day of the week.
I can see your screenshot now! Pretty cool.
