Planing huge adventure map! (Come with suggestions)!

wow, good luck with this, it would be awesome to play.
Okay, I get the feeling that you don't know what lag is. Nice idea, but it would be Hell getting that to compile. But there are ideas to behold to overcome this problem. Just do what valve did for HL2, they made several small levels; where you teleport between levels. I believe it's possible to do, but only in single player. But as far as I know, multiplayer won't work if your map is going to be that big. But you could make smaller map portions, yet that wouldn't be as fun. Just do whatever you feel like doing.

I estimate +80% of the map will be displacements, vertical and horizontal, and displacements are FPS friendly, i have also made the map so when your in different regions of the map other parts won't be drawed by the engine. I have done many tests with incredibly detailed terrain (16x16 blocks with power of 4) covering the hammer almost completely (256 units left on each side) and the FPS ingame is very smooth and high, even on 1600x1200 16x AF 8X AA (graphic card Radeon X850XT +1gb ram)
This looks really nice so far, don't let this project die!
It's really wierd, I've mapped in hammer for around 2 years or so and when I tried to compile a map just taller then a ingame person but expanded the whole map I all ways got errors :(
Check this if you haven't seen it before: http://www.student.ru.nl/rvanhoorn/optimization.php?chapter=intro
Optimizing is crucial, especially in a massive map like this.
Also, will you be using fog? You could set the draw distance and use fog to make the map run better.
I love your idea and if i would be inspired enough i would do maps like this too.
well just wanted to wish good luck and i hope everything will work ^^
when do you release this map?
When gmod 10 comes out he posted that on the first site already ^^
You guys act like he has no idea what he is doing, but I understand perfectly what he is doing and I bet this map will be just fine.
This will be the greatest map ever made! Anyway how about adding some caves?

I have started making the terrain (finaly). The first run on it is to just shape it roughly how it's gonna be, then i will retouch it with a lot more precission. The terrain is made up of 16x16 terrainblocks in the power of 3, i am thinking about changing it to 4 at some places where i need detail, and only 2 at the desert and other flat areas. :P

Oooh looks nice. Can't really tell hight, but Shhhhh.
How did you make such a great "Sketch" of the top down view?
Well, really, only high-end computers would be able to run this map when finished. Having a huge map full of details, NPCs, and a LOT of other things really can lag someone up. Good idea, though.
I think a map that big, with a few trees on it period, would tax some of the higher end of the average spectrum computers... Then adding all those displacements, trees and NPCs?
Oh Jesus, the compile time!?!?!
Anyway, but besides that, good luck with the map. It looks like it'll come out pretty nicely, but I can't believe it won't lag like a son of a biscuit.
This is what area portal's are for.

Drawed it with my tablet, took me 3 days. It will be in the final map as the horizontal surface if some haven't understood that yet :P (i will also add detail texture on it, will make it look sharp on close up)
Also i figgerd out i can't have 4096x4096 texture seens no graphic card supports it, not the engine. so i cut the texture up in 4 2048x2048 instead, to imitate a complete 4096 texture (also has an advantage when it comes how the game preformes i think :P)
This is what area portal's are for.
Yeah, I just thought of that after I posted. Are they really that powerful though, to take a map as big as Hammer can Hammer it, and make it lag very little or not at all?
Hmm so a normal person would be about... a 1/8 of one of the squares?

Man that's small, haha...
What about trees and bushes from Far Cry,they are low poly.Soo many computers will be able to run.
Edit:
How the hell you got 3 textures on one displacement, black, sand, grass?
Edit:
Oh or they are just textures?
Edit:
And make texture 5128x5128 please :).

I will not use far cry vegitation, i will construct it myself, don't worry so much about the technical part, i know what i am doing.. :P
Yay! I really love how this map is progressing.
This looks great, one thing though, don't know if you've said this or not but:
Is the water going to be water or just a blue flat texture?
This is going to kick arse, but I am unable to comprehend how such a large map will be able to run. (but I don't understand areaportals)
EDIT: Oh, will this map be designed for singleplayer or multiplayer? (Working on ideas)
I have planned how to work out the construction of the map, i know how to keep it at a good preformance level with a lot of detail, terrain itslef doesn't require as much people think. I am also skilled with the way to caulk properly and make stuff without wasting polygons. I have done a lot of experiments with max scale maps and i know this won't be a massive problem if made properly.
I am very inspired to make it, i have so many ideas!
Edit:
The black areas are where there is nothing really (beside mountains probaly)
Well if your trying to copy the zelda world mybe find some npcs on gmod that are zelda creatures and people? Would help it. And a City part would be a good idea, Not like ravenholm, Get some materials from zelda and put them on there maybe if you can get some materials from the new zelda game and put those on the buildings?
=D

Seriously.. come on! Ofcourse there will be water to swim in, or else it would be pretty useless

Adding NPCs is not the highest priority right now. I also want to not that i use WinBSPzip, so when the map is finnished with the costum water shader, terrain and sky etc will all be inside the BSP, so those who download it from a server will not miss anything.
This is actually cool,
Ideas: Dragons nest?
Underground lair?
Volcano erupting?
Volcanic rivers underground?
Custom(ish) NPCs (like the daemon from gm_secrets?
At least one large mountain to scale using some easy platforming and walking?
A main "quest" (go around, pick up this item and unlock this door, etc. Probably useless without the custom npcs or some, like, brush-based npcs (dragon head that follows you and shoots flames occasionally, can be destroyed with enough hammering)
A village?
A few magical portals?
I would sudgest not using tons of mountains for the black areas, makes you feal kind of boxed in. Huge mountain tops are ok in the designated area from the concept sketch. Maybe hills, water or swamp there instead of mountains.
Even though I think that this map will be un-playable due to lag, I salut you for trying, this is a big project. I will d/l.
Estimated Compiling time?
