Planing huge adventure map! (Come with suggestions)!
He's already pushing Source engine to it's limits. There's no way he could run the map or even compile it if it was any bigger.
I haven't seen any actual numbers, how can you say this?
This image proves that it isn't nearly close to the max size of the map since he's almost on the end of one corner and can see all the way to the other corner. Source does not render geometry over a certain amount of units away, and that limit is about from one corner of Hammer to the center of Hammer.
Thank you very much.

Really nice idea/implementation
Makes me want to go home and open hammer :)
I'd like to give a helping hand. (With the mapping)
Do you have suggestions or do I have to give some ideas?
EDIT:
I'm a huge fan of the Haunted Mansion and the Phantom Manor ride(s).
I'd like to make the outside of an abandoned Mansion, something like this:

Small graveyard, gate, fence, greenhouse, small towery thingy an maybe an enterable hall.

Infact, i'm far from at the end of the map, i took the pic there seens the volcano doesn't draw if i am at the end (source engine drawing limit)
It's pretty hard to make up any size on that pic, but trust me. it is VERY big. I'm constructing the map to give an epic feel to it. :P
I don't think there is any problem with the map,You shoud makee it.
This is what i am doing right now, it takes shitload of time to form this displacement stuff. :P

note: I'm just using this texture temporary, i will make my own texture to fit the color of the map later.
Woah, I'm really impressed. If everything goes as planned this map is going to be really fun. So many differnt uses for this map it would be really fun just to fool around on.
Although i have been away for a while, i have had a look at a few maps today, and this is by far one of the best. I love your idea, and if my computer worked, i would offer my assistance.
Just a quick question, what setting is the map anyway? (an adventure map, I know that ;).
And does my little mansion idea fit in some woods somewhere?

I don't think so, unless he wants to do it himself. I can't remember where, and I'm too lazy to search, but he said he doesn't want any help with the map at all. But who knows; maybe he will.

Sorry, but everything in the map will be made by me. No help needed :P
I will add a lot more important structures to the map then just random buildings. :P
Ok, no problem, I'll make one anyway and release it as a seperate map ;)
Good luck!
If you go on hammer and go into options you can make the draw limit unlimited. So you won't have problems seeing it all in hammer :D. ( Well not unlimited but enough to see as far as you want).
Try to make the black parts/hill water filled with piranas. Also, make sure noclip isn't useable in the map. Then you will have to build a boat to get acros.
Then for an RP setting, two lords will own a landmass each.
Also, if you do that, make sure to remove the pieces of land connecting the landmasses. That would be cool. If you code an scipt this enough, if could be a seperate gamemod, or if you are THAT cool, even a game. (don't know about steams limitations about hammer).

Can you get a picture of you or an object on the ground so we can see how big it is
Try making a secret room somewhere.
I love to go on adventures. :ghost::v:
This map is turning out nice, but Qwiggalo is right. You wouldn't be able to see from one side of the map to the other if your using the whole grid. Place and object or npc to show the scale of the map.
Make the entire map breakable. And if you eat the pieces, you get 10 health!
You have better know a good ammount of optimising.
post more updates on what you've done I'm so excited for the far away release!
Snowy mountains, we require tall mountains with snow!
four words. Volcano eruption or avalanche.
I just have started on my bigggest map project ever, i plan to release it when GMOD10 comes out.
The idea is a world that fills the entire hammer editor, it will have a lot of stuff to visit (imagine the Zelda games without loading).
I would be thankfull if anyone want to come with some great suggestion to what i can add into this map.
The method i have chosen to do is to draw a 4096x4096 texture (and adding detail shader) that i will expand over the entire editor on a terrain surface and form it, the same method used in games with huge terrain like Planetside, World of Warcraft etc.
Here is a simple sketch i have made, so you have an idea how it might look.

The green dots are trees. :P
Remember this drawing is not how the actual thing will look like, so come with suggestions!
I love the idea!!
Looks like a cool, and fun map. There's a few tree models (that are effects) with leaves in gmod. 1 effect has like 10 trees that are orange. You could make a forest this way (no collisions :( ) and would have no lag :D
nice hope it will be finished
I do too, but I think it's going to take hell to finish :(
Oh god, please don't tell me you gave up on this idea.
I always wanted to make a map like this but i don't think i would be good enougth to make it.
Could this map be for any purpose? Adventure role playing to deathmatch? I always thought the idea of having a deathmatch on a mssive map where you have to actually travel far and hunt eachother down would be cool.

Can't you modify the far Z clip plane in the env_fog_controller?
Wow! This map looks great! Can't wait for it's release! :)
