It's not dead, just that In$ane is taking a well deseverd break.
154 Mapping King rating's, so far he's made a big open area, and a volcano.
People need to step back and look at it for a second.
Well, most people on these forums can't see good mapping even if it smacked them in the face.
If you could finish this it would raise the bar in mapping development. But, you would have to make it run perfectly upon start up. Since you have this much done and you've mapped before I think we can count on you. If this really gets done you would be a mapping GOD.

I have been smacked in the face by good mapping and it hurts. Since being smacked in the face by good mapping I flinch whenever I see it. Currently I am hiding benhind a chair typing this. This is good mapping. I WANT MAP.
I think, there should be a part of the map, where, there is a tunnel, that goes to a fort, then, you kill some scum, then, find some npcs, and they are in your team.
Hello :P, I'm back on track again (starting hammer now). I won't post any pics before it's really worth it.

YES!!! *Heart starting to beat again*
Yes, I can't wait till the release, I think the portal gun should be included with the map, and a course to use the gun.

Maybe it's a little extreme, but displacements on that scale done in that amount is - if absolutely nothing else - a hell of a lot of work. Credit the guy, there's more time going into this than goes into 90% of the maps released here.
Can you put loading spots in it, like in the actual game?

What do you mean by that? Making it sperate levels?
wouldn't that be right hard to do in multiplayer?
I can already see gamemodes being made just for this map. Racing, fortwars, even some quest script with objectives.

Right on! People with a little LUA skills can make costum quests as they like. Like objects or things that need to be done to get rewards etc. (Blending quests with RP?)
This map will be great!
This map will be great!
Not as great as my mum's pankcakes!
Wait... They taste like shit.
Heh, you got rated Mapping King with only concept of map :D But dude, that ingame pic is nice, must have taken ages to compile with that size, or well, it is about how much lights you are gonna put in.
That is nice idea, but will take much time to make. I'm also planning somekind of paradise map with jungle and else, got some nice-ass textures.
Yay, your working on it again I thought it went dead I was like oh :hellnaw:.
I've been wanting a map like this forever o.O
You could always use fog to make a soft fade into the distance rather than it cutting off... Driver 1 style.
Also, adding NPCs to a multiplayer map can (apparantly) slow the server down lots, so be careful where you use them... and I reckon that the reason you get no lag when running the map, is because there's no detail, no props or anything, just terrain.
You should have the time of day change quickly, also the weather (use an func_precipitation and use some sort of trigger to make it randomly turn & off)...
I have done this hill stuff again and again 3 times until i found the absolute best way to do it, and it gives a lot of preformance boost for low-end PCs. The compile took only 30 min seens i used very low detailed lightmaps and VRAD on "fast".
The image was taken in 1280x960 (16xAF) and it was at a steady 300FPS (300 is the max FPS for the source engine, mean's it was above 300.) no matter how much i see of the map (Graphic card: Radeon X850XT)
Normal mode

I set the "light_enviroment" to be pretty dark so i could see any problems with the surface clearly.
It has only taken me two days to construct all that brushwork you see in the pic, also notice how they are cut up. :P
Edit: I forgot to mention that i have made two new textures, those used on the "hill things". :P
Hurr!
You optimized it again!
So... could you tell me a bit about the planned ideas?

I am planning on creating huge trees in the forest, built out of either displacement or brushes, there will also be placed a temple there. For the vulcano i will create a costum emitter to blow out huge smokeparticles so it appairs to be active. Almost everything in the map will have costum texture; the sky, water, lava (costum water) and other stuff. I will also have looping ambient sounds to make some atmosphere in the map. There will be a lot more then this, but i just don't know what or where it will be before i am finnished with the basic structure of the map.

It's custom, not costum. But anyway, sounds brilliant.
