So, I went back as far possible and I found this abomination. [t]http://puu.sh/whVD[/t] [t]http://puu.sh/whVI[/t] Unfortunately, I don't have any maps that represent my current skill because I mostly just dabble in small, specific things now. Also, any map I start will never get finished; I've never released a map after my first.
To really see the improvement, just look at the little building in the corner. Then compare it to the rightmost building in the old map. It's a huge improvement.
Actually this guy is a mapping and//or trolling god because those are both pictures of the same map, but from a different angle. Look at pic one, far right building. Then look at pic two, building below him... Same building. I played the old shitty picture 1 version of that map. I had it on a Zombie Mod server I used to run because despite the shitty appearances, it actually played pretty well, except for the tunnel maze in the sewer was kinda stupid. If you don't believe me, look at the road layout.
Those remind me of Unreal Tournament
Aye, that pyramid map (Hypership) was inspired by DM-Pyramid!

The improvement is still there, though, and it actually looks pretty nice, rather than amateurish now.
I started mapping in 2007, I'm still not too good at it. I did learn the displacement tool and how to make doors.
I started mapping in 2007, I'm still not too good at it. I did learn the displacement tool and how to make doors.
Same here, my first map was just a block and when I pressed F9 my PC crashed. I am a horrible mapper.
Same here, my first map was just a block and when I pressed F9 my PC crashed. I am a horrible mapper.
My very first map was a small room, and I used the actual sky textures instead of the skybox tool texture and it looked strange.
My first released map was the second map I made. I later released a _v3 of this map, but here are screenshots of zm_cabin_v2b Now for some screens of my current project. This, strangely enough, is actually something that developed out of my very first map. What I mean is that I used what my first map became as a base for the map that was then used to make the map I'm showing you now. (I already fixed the crosswalk in this picture.) But yeah that's what I'm working on, a version 2 of rp_retribution which I released here a number of months ago.
The highway looks very strange... I'm use to things like this Having a road like that with high sides, single lane and high middle looks weird.
First released map : (The only screenshot I could find , recompiling it didn't work as I manage to crash on map load. Wow. ) Not released, but most recent compiled stuff that doesn't look like total ass: [img_thumb]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/542902879589062211/A43EA1F716A21032B01DAB608795DB39B95359F4/[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/594699991494122879/81AE7240ACD82C1060160F41AB8862AD2CA00311/[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/542922883559111146/8728F8653AB47800B3B8EDDCEECED23AA0A41957/[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/542922883559280479/ECB2972343615E6F546E69AB8F172375DD5C14F7/[/img_thumb]

holy shit
would anyone despise me if I reposted my maps? No one likes posting things and being the last comment of the page.
would anyone despise me if I reposted my maps? No one likes posting things and being the last comment of the page.
Well if it matters that much to you, go ahead and snip your previous post. Nice stuff by the way
I don't really have any pictures of my first maps ( or the bsp's for that matter ), but most of them were pretty tiny with a lot of poorly put together areas. A good example is that I used to build two brushes for a single wall ( if you could be on both sides of the wall ) and apply a texture to one brush and another texture to the other, instead of face editing. Along with this I did a lot of other shit like carving, intersecting brushes, etc. This is probably my best creation to date
Looks like Dead Island Hotel. Is it? Man that is some awesome mapping.
As soon as I stopped using the 'Carve' tool, an unexplainable improvement.
As soon as I stopped using the 'Carve' tool, an unexplainable improvement.
Oh god in my first couple of maps I used carve to make doorways in hollowed boxes. I have not used either since.
I don't have anything new or shiny to compare these with, I just think it's interesting to show older stuff. I have kept all my creations since I started mapping in '08, but it's all archived and hard to get to unless I decompress the lot, so here's my oldest stuff on hand. (2009/2010) [T]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1707143/Releases/sector48/s48-2.jpg[/T] [T]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1707143/Releases/11-Day-Project/beta-2.jpg[/T] [T]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1707143/Releases/dm_dev4/progress-1.jpg[/T] [T]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1707143/Releases/Atrium/TF2-style.jpg[/T] [T]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1707143/Releases/Atrium/atrium-4.jpg[/T] Last year I attended a thought-provoking presentation by a professional graphic designer at UIC. Along with much insight into the creative industry, he said that in order to improve one's work, one should compare their output to that of their hero. "It's the gap between us and our heroes that cultures our own personal development". He said that a person should feel slight(to extreme) repulsion at the sight of their old work, as contentment with a consistent level of output facilitates stagnation. I believe his sentiments ring true for a variety of life goals, but instead of repulsion at the sight of my old stuff, I feel encouraged by how far I have come. Sure, I can slap myself for all the silly mistakes and bad ideas I evidently made in the past, but it's really just validating to know how capable I am of personal development. It takes dedication, self-discipline, and humility to reach new heights, even in something fun like level design. You should all feel proud for how far you've come, and be encouraged to improve every time you pick up your tools and get inspired.
It is funny, because if I post my oldest map, and compare it to my newest, those two maps would look equal.
