Oskutin what software do you use for modelling?
Any tips for getting into modelling? Useful tutorials?
I have been using hammer for ages and I feel so lost in any real 3d modelling program.

I've had great success making models out of brushes in hammer 100 times bigger than normal to get detailing in, then scaling them down 0.01% in propper's entity settings.

The only problem I've been facing is that each model is close to 10,000 polygons, so make sure you account for the shrink if you do this.
That is quite a novel approach to making models.

[del]Well in theory he could partner with another model maker who could then optimise his work since I'm sure they'd be much more grateful if all they had to do was improve the topology rather than model it from scratch.[/del]
Well apparently model makers would rather make it from scratch.

First time making curtains!

Quick and nasty. Went for the stiff approach.

Just cause you slipped it between some meat-curtains doesn't mean we need to details man; this thread is about mapping!

you could say the same for oskutin's model trains and tracks as well. though we have model pimpage to show off props, lots mappers love to show their model work anyway. it doesn't really matter imo since it doesn't detract much from the essence of the thread, level design.

I was making a sex joke...
He said "Quick and nasty. Went for the stiff approach."
And he modeled some curtains so I threw in a meat-curtain reference.
It was really quite professional good sir; I find no grounds for your complaint. Really, I've done you a service. Consider yourself more cultured for the exposure to the refined funnies I exposed you to.
(I was never actually questioning the modeling in a mapping forum- people do it plenty and it fits in here, because they're used in maps)

Really how is everyone not reading what I said as a sex joke?
I said meat curtains...
It was a bad joke, yeah, but it wasn't that bad.

Um, why are you talking like that? You really lose credibility in a conversation when you go all "sir" on someone, trying to look "sophisticated" or something.
Okay, here's the situation, because I'm digging myself a hole and it's just getting deeper:
I made a bad joke. It probably didn't even warrant a reply.
Then in my response to the replies, I was sarcastically suggesting that the (bad) sex humor was too sophisticated for you all to understand (and it wasn't, because it isn't sophisticated- I wasn't trying to be insulting with it).
I was joking with the "sir" and with the "professional" and with the "refined" and really all of it.
Not trying to be patronizing or anything.
I am laughing right now, but not at you guys. This has just become so much more of a thing than it should have.
He said "quick and nasty" and I thought it was funny and that maybe he didn't realize that it sounded dirty. I made a joke. That's really the only intention I had behind the post.
I didn't ever intend to suggest that modeling does not belong here, nor did I intend to come off as "sophisticated", because people who do that on forums really do lose credibility. I thought you guys would understand that I'm not that stupid, and was typing that way on purpose, and facetiously.

I'm eagerly waiting for the next post to suggest that I'm an anti-semite or something.

Or that I disapprove of the very idea of videogames.

That boat is sexy enough that I would slide it into my meat curtains any day.

That safe would definitely make a couple-inch depression in the cushions, even if it were empty.
Hey guys/gals,
I could use a little help with the horror map that I posted a bit ago. I just need a few questions answered so I can get a feel of what approach that I should be taking to make this as successful as possible.

Should I post a separate thread for this? I actually need an "idea's guy" now.
i know it's a wip, but tbh it looks like you just hollowed a cube, gave it some textures, and tossed in random stuff. what is it supposed to be, really?
a 5-Point CP with the middle at the top of the "hill"
it's old tbh
so many things wrong with this shot, but fixing them would mean having to go again through the 10+ minutes it takes to compile this damn thing. :v:

Ah jeez I forgot those safes weigh a ton. I'll move it onto the floor.
Also, I can't believe I forgot to texture the floor...

How did you get the light rays from the window?
How did you get the light rays from the window?
boxes with a lightray-ish transparent texture I would guess
How did you get the light rays from the window?
It's model from episode 2 vol_light something like that , and I set it like prop_dynamic and made it more
translucent by setting render mode to World Space Glow and set FX amount to lower number (around 30).... I have no idea if I'm supposed to do it like that, but it turned out pretty good
Been working on this map what you guys think =D?
Im no expert in mapping

You have the right idea for detailing, but the theming is off.
This is supposed to be some kind of space station/ship, yet you have drainage pipes and other random junk.
Otherwise it looks good.
