Tried to make a kitchen for the horror map. It feels empty. What should I add?

A butcher.
Or food.

Food...sure
A butcher...it would be cool, but everyone is dead. :v:

Ah how about a dead butcher!

Definitely stains and/or burns on the floor and ceiling. Trash near the walls, stuff like that.
Overlays are a pretty important part of detail.
I guess something that source doesn't provide as models but seems missing from that kitchen are dishes and/or racks full of dishes alongside dish-washing machinery.

City 17's citizens eat with their hands.

Well, this and the other (probably dead) SS13 map could definitely be used as a base for a SS13 gamemode. TTT alone would do well for traitor rounds. Kind of surprised there hasn't been a map where one needs to GET DAT FUKKEN DISK to actually win the round.
Also, pretty much unrelated to the thread, but if you are still having issues with missing textures in the 2D view, what you need to do is extract the materials/debug folder from Half-Life 2/platform/platform_misc_dir.vpk using GCFscape, and then put that extracted materials folder into Half-Life 2/hl2/ (and /ep2 or whatever engine you are mapping on). This wil restore all of the missing debug textures in Hammer and Model Viewer.
I want to make a bhop map for CSS but I have no idea what to make it about. Where do you guys get ideas from?
Here's another room on the yacht, does the ceiling light in the middle look okay to you guys? I'll probably re-do some of the custom textures and get a better sofa modeled. Along with, well many more changes.

There should be long aluminium kitchen tables that you can put along the wall by the window.

Maybe the place was built and abandoned before the great dishes ban of 2020.

Just started putting this scene together since I started learning how to model the other day, I'm going for a cozy feel.

Spirited Away?
yes! that was my primary inspiration, i'm glad it's showing through.

Working on one as we speak. It was a fantastic idea! Thank you!

I completely agree. Added burns around the stoves and ovens. I'm also trying to get (as funny as it sounds) the trash layout looking normal, and not overused. Thank you for the suggestion! It's really looking alot better!

I'm hoping to find like a tray model that I can use, maybe even different varying stacks as a single model as well, but no luck so far.

Just finishing up the touches with your idea, it's really looking great! Thank you!

I gave it a shot and to be completely honest it looked a bit over-crowded. Great idea! But it might have looked better in a larger kitchen. The kitchen I have now suits the size of the dining area, so I might not mess with the size.
Thank you all for those wonderful ideas! It's looking great! I just wish that I was able to grab a few screens before my HL2 crapped out on me. I'll be sure to post it once I get it working.

I'm pretty sure Black Mesa has some tray models, but I think they're clean though.

I just sent out an email to their Prop Lead Developer asking to see what they have available prop wise. I feel like a jerk emailing this guy, but in all honestly I could use his help. Even if it's a tip or two, I wouldn't mind.

I wouldn't worry about that. Better to ask for permission than to use it without and have people get mad at you for it. As long as you're nice about asking the other person wouldn't think you're a jerk or anything.

I thought the Black Mesa team already gave full permission to use their stuff as long as you're not making money off of it? I thought there was a dev post or maybe even an announcement about it.
Yeah, I seem to remember that too.
I hope some of those old classic HL1 mods get resurrected in BMS when the full thing finally comes out.

Did you make all the models there? Because if you did I want your skills, and your texturing skills. And particle making steams skills.
I made everything but the stools, the hanging chicken and the pot to the right next to the support, they're all just placeholders until I make my own. And thanks! the models I've used have basically been the first models I've ever made, I'm quite happy with them.

Project im working on with sfm, man does it make WIP shots a lot more appealing.

Very nice so far, but please keep effects like DoF off WiP shots. It kind of defeats the purpose of WiP shots if everything is blurred.

Still in need of changing a lot of these hl2 textures, but for now they are just place holders.

This was for a trade_server map, but I was REALLY liking how this hallway came out so I thought I'd share.

A bland, grey hallway?
