This is by no means "my" map - I did make it some like 7 years ago but its basically just a recreation of my favorite halo 2 level, lockout. This was the first map I ever released, I found on steam workshop someone refurbished it and added in some textures, warper effects, snow and changed the skybox, they also added the power lines. So this is a great collaboration..8 year old map lol.

I was never a fan of the Halo games, but I remember this map from skipping a class after lunch at school one day when my friend had just got Halo 2 and we would play it together.
Even with the poor textureset and the blockiness I think whoever made the map did a pretty good job.

'drab' as in barren walls with next to no detail, wires that inexplicably lead to nowhere, jarring skybox, uninteresting lighting; i could go on.
it hardly looks like a research base. coat it in dev textures and it may well look like a basic block out. yes, it's a recreation but what i'm just saying is that as it stands the map looks terribly bland and it being a remake is a terrible excuse to skimp on improving some areas.

The prop placement and Lighting is alright but the main brushes are square/rectangle and the texture makes it a bit bad. Try adding some supports/trim and changing the texture of the walls.
Also a tip when taking screenshots.

Make it a little flooded/ a trigger event that floods the room
The lighting is a bit "cosy". Maybe give the floor a thin puddle of water and have a red light to match?

pretty good idea for single player ported maps= port everything and light everythign up with project textures, which turn on/off as one is seen/unseen

Sorry to break it for you, but spamming ported Stalker and Metro 2033 props over blocky geometry does not look too good.

It's going to be almost impossible to get it right, you're better off baking it in the textures

Its an old soviet bunker and i checked a lot of pictures about the architecture of bunkers including soviet bunkers. I have even downloaded a plan of a bunker and the rooms were "blocky" as you describe it.
Its a bunker it was designed to protect people and not a aesthetic hotel.
But if i am wrong then correct me please.

Right now I'm fiddling with func_rotating and it's sound emitter effect, and lighting.
All combined into one ceiling fan.

Put a Env_sprite with a glow sprite inside the light bulb and set the render mode to "world space glow".
You will get a nice glowing.
So that's what I've been looking for. I'll add it immediately.

I guess you could try throwing in a light entity in each room to act as ambient lighting so that the shadows wouldn't be as dark. That's what I do when making scenebuilds in a dark room with little to no ambient light.
